How to do I start undergraduate research?

Go talk to your professors. Find someone who's class you did well in, or your chemistry adviser, and ask them if they know anyone in the dept who's taking on undergrad researchers. Don't worry too much about what you're doing, just that you get a chance to do something. Be willing to work hard - reading papers, doing mundane tasks, and putting in at least 10 hours per week.

It's very unlikely you'll find a program that will take you on for 3 weeks. You've got very limited time between Dec and Jan before you have to be back in classes - even REU programs, which typically run 8-10 weeks, are very hurried - it's hard to get anything done in that time, at least done well. You can either spend 8 weeks introducing the student to the topic but not getting anything original done, or you can throw them into a pre-made project where they can accomplish something but never really understand what they did since they didn't have the background. You can do research at US universities, just not through REU programs - ask your adviser or professors if they are willing to take you on, or know someone who is.
