Has anything interesting happened in Montreal, Canada or any part of Quebec in the last 50 years?
In Montreal since 1957, here are some of the ones I can recall. My suggestion is that you ask your parents about where their parents were born, what your family history is, and you can ask them if they remember any interesting stories about any of the events I listed. Your teacher wants you to the oral presentation to let you get that perspective on things. You may not remember these events yourself, but they probably impacted your life, or the lives of your parents.
- 1955 to 1960, the Montreal Canadiens were heroes of hockey as they one five Stanley Cups in a row with Maurice Richard. In the 1955 season, he was suspended and this resulted in the "Richard Riot" in Montreal.
- 1959, the St. Laurence Seaway officially opened.
- 1962, construction of the Metro subway system is started. The subways start running to kick off the 1967 Montreal exposition.
- 1967, Expo '67 opened and was visited by over 50 million people.
- 1969, Montreal gets itself the Expos baseball team. They play here to disappointing crowds and eventually are moved in 2005 and become the Washington Nationals.
- 1970, the October Crisis occured with the FLQ setting off bombs in mailboxes, kidnapping dignitaries, and ultimately the killing of James Cross. Prime Minister Trudeau calls in the army to restore order and deal with the FLQ.
- 1970s, the Montreal Canadiens again are the talk of the town, with players like Steve Shutt, Larry Robinson, Bob Gainey, and Ken Dryden at the helm. They win four Stanley Cups in a row, and in 1977 play the Russians in a hard-fought series of games that are remembered to this day by many.
- 1976, the Olympics come to Montreal and introduce us to Nadia Comaneci, who scored seven perfect 10s in gymnastics. It also brought Montreal the Olympic Stadium, nicknamed the "big owe" by some because it took 30 years to pay off the debt caused by building it and hosting the Olympic events.
- 1989, fourteen women are killed at Ecole Polytechnique.
- 1990, the Oka Crisis erupts with the killing of a Surete du Quebec officer. The roads are blocked in both Oka and at the Mercier bridge by the Mohawk warriors.
- 1998, one of the worst ice storms in history hits the Montreal area, knocking out power during the winter season to thousands of Montrealers.
