This depends on how the club is organized. The club I belong to welcomes new members no matter what they ride. Club rides are organized by average speed and the first 6 weeks each group has 2 experienced club members to help keep the group together. With few exceptions, teamwork and cooperation is the guiding principle for each group, if someone is dropped on a ride it is the fault of the group, not the person who was left behind. When we ride, we do constant head checks to make sure everyone is there. The best riders are the ones who fit into a group in such a way that they make things easier for the others. Showing off how strong you are in a way that puts the weakest in the group in difficulty is not encouraged. There are groups at all levels, if you are a strong rider you can find a group that will challenge your ability. Every spring we offer a series of riding clinics to teach the new members how to fit in with the more experienced riders. The ones who take the clinics almost always end up being good cyclists. A group cannot ride faster than the pace at which the slowest rider can move in comfort. In a group like that, the strongest riders can help by doing a bigger share of the work at the front pacing the group at the speed of that slowest rider. Not all clubs operate this way, but it works for us, many of our members also race and the club has produced numerous national and provincial champions.

Do women have to take their hats off when the National Anthem is being played?
They technically should. Whenever I wear a hat, I do, but I don't wear those frilly, big, women's hats. I can't stand those. There might be a different etiquette rule for those types of hats.
