Peace corp?

I've applied twice. It's a great org. Unfortunately they need SKILLS,,, one being spelling and a way to express onesself,,,especially in a foreign language, among soooo many others.

It does not COST

Unless you consider devoting at least 2 years of your life,,, in another life,,, a cost to you?

The idea of helping is noble... I applaud you for that, and have suggestions.

On a VERY LOCAL level, you can accomplish miracles in helping. So many things you can involve in even in your town, that will not only, possibly help others, but help you as well.

No offense to your education level, but perhaps wanting to help will motivate you to learn, or seek more education. It couldn't hurt...

Anything worth committing to is valid for you to attempt in this regard. Aide at a nursery, nursing home, day care, library, charity orgs and events, any level of community service IS a form of HELPING,, and BTW,,, to serve food to the homeless, at Thanks Giving, for example,,, takes minimal education, but certainly you have to spend emotion.

Try it,,,please.

When you join the peace corp do you work on weekends?

Learn to spell it, Sparky. Peace Corps. Capitalized, "S" on the end.

Different jobs have different requirements. Teachers in boarding schools correct papers, supervise the students who live too far away to go home and plan lessons on the weekends.

Nurses in clinics work weekends.

I worked 60 hours a week when school was in session. When it wasn't, I didn't.

In 2008, the last year for which I have numbers, they had 11,000 applications, accepted 4,000 people as trainees. 20% - 40% of trainees wash out or quit. You need a college degree or 10 - 50 years of experience in small business or agriculture to have a hope of getting invited.

You will get some days off, and you get 2 days of vacation per month, which you can save up.

Has anyone been denied by the Peace Corp because of their weight?

No, but health is a huge factor in deciding on someone's application. Many Peace Corps assignments send volunteers to physically demanding places (one person I know was assigned to a job that required him to be on a bike 4-5 hours out of the day!) and they take into consideration your ability to complete physically challenging tasks.

I could imagine someone too frail or someone too out of shape would have a hard time being placed in the Peace Corps. That being said, there is a very wide range of "qualifying body types," and many of my friends (large and small) have found satifying assignments with the Peace Corps.
