Can anyone explain National Insurance and PAYE to me?

PAYE

647L means you can earn 6475 a year before paying tax. Dividing by 12, the first 539 pounds each month is not taxed. You earn about 720 a month, less 539 is 181 taxable at 20p, so you would pay 36 pounds income tax.

NI - about 11% of earnings above around 60 pounds a week. Not sure of the exact figs, I think NI is 2% up to the 60 pounds.

extra comment - each year, around April/May you will be given a P60 slip from your employer - keep all these safely.
