Are you counting wild birds this weekend (US)?

I already went on a hike and counted some birds in my area. Mostly crows, hawks, owls, and woodpeckers. It was fun and very rewarding to see and hear the many birds.

the great backyard bird count is Feb 18-Feb 21 and they have results for years of bird data--you might want to do something like see what the difference in species attracted to your backyard is for different types of seeds versus no seeds provided--ie black oil sunflower one week, thistle another week, and a cake of suet another week and no seeds another --if you have time two weeks each would be even better since it takes birds a while to locate food sources (you should record species each day)

Eggs...what is the?

Eggs...what is the?

I RECENTLY DID THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT AND FOUND THE ANSWER TO THIS ON THEIR SIGHT IT IS CALLED CHALAZA AND IS COMPOSED OF ONE OR TWO SPIRAL BANDS OF TISSUE THAT SUSPEND THE EGG YOLK IN THE CENTER OF THE EGG WHITE, IT IS CLOUDY AND WHITE AND IF YOU PULL IT, IT ACTS LIKE A SPRING AND WILL BOUNCEBACK, CHALAZA IS THE AGENT THAT MAKES SOME OF THE WHITE OF THE EGG STICK TO THE YOLK WHEN YOU REMOVE THE YOLK FROM THE EGG LOOK IT UP IN THE DICTIONARY.
