As if is certainly missing the point, we cant afford to pay them??? no but as a country we are on our knees financing these youths with benefit payments creating a cant work wont work culture that has gone on for at least a generation. As if I doubt that there are many like you who got into university straight after school and gone into a family business, family businesses like those that now face ruin at the hands of these yobs. I left school at 16 with hardly any qualifications but managed to get a place on a government scheme, then onto a full time job and subsequently served in the armed forces so i can personally vouch for the training. We are not for one minute suggesting that these kids are sent to the front line to fight wars (illegal or otherwise) but bolstering our communities providing a service for their nation. In times on natural disaster, extreme weather conditions this force could be sent in to help clean up and rebuild the communities devastated. The current wave of rioting has spawned groups of people going in to clean up the aftermath which shows that some people still have pride in their communities. The National Service that I propose would be designed to educate the teens disillusioned by the school system by teaching them real skills. Skills like numeracy, literacy, financial awareness alongside hand skills, skills that will give them a better chance of employment after their commitment has ended. My son is 14 and has stated a desire to be a mechanic but where are all the apprenticeships? National service could be a springboard into a real apprenticeship for those that desire it. The teens that have been arrested should be put into orange jumpsuits and made to clean up their mess, not given day trips to adventure parks or the like to stop them from feeling exclude, that exclusion is of their own making by taking part in the rioting. Show their peers by example that there is a consequence for their actions, be firm with them. I feel like I am ranting but my point I believe is valid
