what does the red cross do?
We respond to disasters all around the world. Each individual country has a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society (Israel has the Magen David Adom), and is composed primarily of volunteers who commit to being trained in various tasks to help people prepare for and recover from disasters. "Preparing for" includes training in CPR, First Aid, and other classes.
In New York City, from January 1 through February 28, 2010 the Red Cross responded to 424 fires, building collapses, floods and other emergencies, and assisted 2,114 adults and children with food, shelter and/or counseling following a disaster. There are some days that are not too busy, and then there are 8 hour shifts where I go to 3 fires.
We get to fires within an hour of hearing about them from FDNY. We take people to hotels if they need them, and give them food, clothing, and financial assistance to get them through the next 24-72 hours, during which time they meet with caseworkers who will steer them to longer-term help.
