First, it's a national holiday, so no work and no school (I think I still have to go to classes that day though, ugh). We don't celebrate Halloween, so don't expect a bunch of kids in devil costumes trick or treating here, it's considered to be politically incorrect to celebrate gringo holidays. You might still see groups of low socioeconomically group kids trick or treating (they don't even bother to put on a costume though), but they'll rarely get any candy because nobody celebrates it. I don't even see the point in wasting their time like that.
Dia de muertos is a serious holiday. Many families of any background set up altars in their living room to a dead relative or a celebrity they liked that has passed away (the person could have died centuries ago, the only thing that matters is that the person isn't living anymore). You put fruit like tangerines and tecojotes, veggies like jicamas and sugar cane. You also put dead bread (it's a special kind of bread that is only cooked at that time of year, it's sold everywhere if you wish to try it), sugar or chocolate skeleton candies, colored china papers that you can buy at any papelería store for a few pesos. Not obligatory, but a logical idea to put a photo of the person, cook a few dishes the person liked when he/she was still alive and if the person of the altar is a child, a few of their favorite toys.
People write calavera poems which is sort of a mockery poem about a person (real or fictional tv character) has died when he/she hasn't in real life. People love making calavera poems of politicians, I wonder why...
Mexico City can't compare the celebration to rural towns, but you'll still see some awesome altars if you know where to look. They put nice altars in the Zocalo square, museums (the Frida Kahlo museum always has nice altars) and neighborhoods in the southeast of the city. Request info about good altar searching in Tlalpan or Xochimilco. Cementeries look awesome at night on Nov 2nd because they become full of life.
why don't we get off at least one day for Ramadan in the US?
Come on pal.
EDIT: Read Dedicated Secularist's response. 100% on the proverbial money. 10 points for him/her and a candy cane in the stocking.
