It used to be, when the cars had carburetors, the teams could set the cars up in race trim , and that meant adjusting the carbs. now its just practice for race day ,to make any adjustments to the cars.
Lyrics to the Indianapolis 500 theme song "The Five Hundred"?
Over the horizon on Memorial Day
The sun shows its face
People come from everywhere
To witness the greatest race
In the pits, mechanics tune the motors
Gettin' ready for the fight
Gentlemen, start your engines
The green flag is down
CHORUS:
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Cheers and banners fill the air
Together with the smell of burnin' gasoline
Everybody on your feet to welcome
The ferocious machines
33 warriors in their chariots
Go out into the battlefield
33 shiny helmets
Take command of the wheel
CHORUS:
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Flashing color turbos bite into the ground
Along the straightaway
Fearless men dream to be the winners
On this glorious day
500 miles to the checkered flag to show the bravery
500 miles to the finish line to victory
CHORUS:
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis
Indianapolis…Indianapolis (2x)
Question over Indianapolis 500?
First, you need an IRL competition license, for which you need to demonstrate the ability to drive an IndyCar. That is usually handled on Rookie Day, but you need experience to even get admitted to rookie day. Second, a boat load of money comes in handy, as it costs several hundred thousand dollars just to field a car at the 500. Most of that comes from sponsors, so you really need sponsors. Third, you need to qualify. Only 33 cars are allowed, so you must be one of the 33 fastest. In the really old days, lots of drivers came and didn't qualify. In the old days, lame, slow dentists with sponsorship from toothpaste companies could qualify. More recently the lamest and slowest don't even get sponsors, so almost everyone is competitive, though only a few have a reasonable chance of winning the race. Still makes for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
