wtc - world trade center?

it feels like the americans were hit by enemies within. anyone that knows a little bit about design, architecture and engeneering, knows those towers couldnt have fall like that.

it was a tragic day and im sorry for those who died in such horrible pain and im sorry for those you will live with the pain of loosing loved ones.

Its something i hope it doesnt repeat again, nor in america nor in other countries, 'cause we are all targets.

What is the best architecture in the world?

What is the best architecture in the world?

I prefer Gothic architecture but really also like Frank Loyd Wright. It's really about what you find visually stimulating and why.

I'm not sure about what Ayn Rand said...I'll have to look into that.

Architecture at UCL? 10pts?

Architecture at UCL? 10pts?

sorry~ i really disagree with the answer above. ucl's architecture course is placed TOP in the uk, above bath in league tables, so certainly has an excellent reputation. a UCL degree WOULD be prestidgious.

UCL is the 3rd top uni in the uk, one of the top unis in the world : ) its facilities are excellent.

UCL the definition of prestigious. its a great uni :D

i wrote my BA thesis on archtecture (i did a design degree at st martins, nearby) & heard endlessly of its reputation. well done on aiming high, and on your predicted grades : )

your site is situated near the rest of ucl~ see it on this map. map- its not far, very walkable. its a flat area, so bikes abound. that bit of bloomsbury is very leafy & green, with odd squares dotted about.

ucl certainly does have a campus. its not surrounded by halls like some unis, but the main area is on one site, with another main building down the street. the rest of the uni surrounds it, all in a small area. the main site has a cute green in front. it doesnt feel disconnected, & has probably the most famous student night life in london. there are always people hanging on the lawns in the main entrance to the mallet st (main) site, & it has a nice, chilled feel to it. there are 2 other unis in the area, on the same st as UCL. check it on gogole earth : )

bloomsbury is a great area~ its just near town (ie, central london, oxford st, covent garden etc). you can walk places quickly, and its easy to learn your way around, as there are so many major sts which are recogniably different. i STILL get stoked about being literally ON the monopoly board :D london is expensive, but its also thrillingly exciting at times. there are 2 other unis, SOAS & birkbeck, nearby, meaning the area is studenty & friendly.

the main halls for UCl are just nearby, just behind goodge st, called ramsay hall. they are corridors of single rooms, with bathrooms dotted here & there, & a large canteen in the ground floor. other halls are newer ones~ eg in camden, which is a really vibrant area, & walkable to uni. rooms are mainly singles, with a single bed, desk, basin, wardrobe. you can get guided tours on ucl's site. some are like little flats, in halls (so several bedrooms, with a kitchen etc) ive no idea how allocation works. halls are in good areas. if you make it your first choice, most unis will guarentee a place in halls, rather than shooing you out into the real world of shared houses, but i dont know how much choice you get on chosing *which* halls you go into. i was already living in a student house share when i began my degree course, so i never experianced halls. i still feel i kinda missed out, though i was in an incredibly cool house w ace housemates :/ most people really enjoy it. but you can move if you hate it!

being from a low income family shouldnt make any difference~ in fact you should be able to get a full grant for living costs, but im not 100% sure on that. you need to see your uni or careers advisor at school/6th form about this. you WILL be able to afford uni, but will probably chose to get a part time job to be able to afford more beer/trainers/tomes on le corbusier. tsr has a good forum on finances~ post here, or have a good read through. even if you have to get a loan, remember you pay it back in the FUTURE, not now. chill : )

living costs depend on how you live, really- £1000pm is a VERY generous calculation, most people do it on way less its what UCL calculate, but i think its a bit out. eg- most people do NOT go out & spend £50 socialising every week, as UCl calculate. you can live well on less than £1k pm. eg SOAS uni nearby has a food co-op, selling food at cost price to students. bike or walk (both feasible from halls) & you pay no travel. you wont be the only skint student- & part time work is far easier to find in london than other places.

travel~ the train, the coach, or a car. that rail line is one of the best in the uk, as it travels down the coast, literally along side the sea some of the way. book in advance, & its cheap. national express run coaches which take longer, bt cost less. cheapest of all~ megabus; book long enough in advance & its a mere £1.50 each way, though on rather uncomfortable seats, & taking forever :/ theres a decent amount of expats down here, and im sure youll end up meeting other geordies with cars, from whom you can blag a lift home, for a bit of petrol money sometimes. im from devon & the devon mafia is HE-OW-uge in london (as my geordie friend'd say).

whereever you apply, really do try to get to an open day~ in the autumn. i DO suggest you sneak off to speak to people in a canteen/ having a fag outside etc. open day students are the Well Behaved ones.
