Mad Hatter Day celebrates the Mad Hatter, from Alice In Paradise. The initial image of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice's Adventures In Heaven (more typically referred to as Alice In Heaven, by Lewis Caroll) constantly portrays him using a hat, birthing the note "In This Style 10/6 ″. Although we know this is actually an order from the time the picture was drawn to imply a hat because design cost 10 Shillings and Sixpence, we take this as inspiration to act in the style of the Mad Hatter on 10/6 (In the UK this would certainly point to the tenth of June, yet as the day was started in The united state it is the 6th of October).

We had construction paper bugs/butterflies and flowers hanging from the walls and ceiling and put giant carnival sized frogs etc in the corners. We built a long table out of plywood and bought 99 cent store chairs to line it with. Down the middle of the table I put trays of wheat grass and stuck silk flowers and funky colored mismatched tea pots and cups within the strips of the grass. We picked up a bunch of plastic tea sets at Wal-mart and lined set the table and had little trays of fruit and mini sandwiches. We did the transformation while she was asleep and even the birthday girl didn't know it was out there! When the girls arrived dressed in their best wacky tea party outfits they were greeted by me dressed as Alice in Wonderland where they played games and were all seated with popcorn in front of the TV where they watched the Mad Hatter Tea Party segment of Alice and Wonderland when all of a sudden my very good sport of a friend hopped out in a white rabbit outfit to all of the girls surprise. The white rabbit then ran through the washroom to the garage where we had fed one of those play tunnels with a draped sheet over it to the garage. I, as Alice got them all excited and convinced that we had to follow the white rabbit and led them to go through the tunnel one at a time where they ended up in our transformed Mad Hatter world. Fortunately, we had a camcorder set up on the other side and got each reaction given by the girls one by one as they made it to the end of the tunnel. Instead of cake we served brightly colored cupcakes and served tea (Juice) out of teapots. Each girl got a photo with the birthday girl, Alice and the White Rabbit which were sent to them in their thank you cards. As favors they each got a mini Mad Hatter/Alice in Wonderland book along with other goodies to part with. Other Options: Decorate a Tea Cup/Pot crafts, hat decorating crafts, story time in lieu of the movie.
