why was The Salvation Army formed in Australia?

The Salvation Army came to Australia in 1880 from the UK. Twenty years before Australia was officially called Australia and the six states of Australia were named on January 1st 1900 on our Federation Day.

Bringing their soup, soap and salvation to the new settlers and families of the colony's of Sydney and Melbourne and have been here ever since.

Most Salvos who arrived in the 1880's with the new settlers. Worked as midwives in hospitals and collected food from farms. To offer meals to patients in hospitals and charity to the poor, sick and released convicts and their families.

All Salvos counselled and assisted families of Australian soldiers in WW1 and WW2 and assisted convicts in courts and prisons, collected food, clothing, blankets and monetary donations for Christmas Hampers for families and they still do today in 2009.

This is why you see the Salvos march on Anzac day 25th April along side with Australian soldiers and their families.

All of us in Australia dig deep and give very generous donations for their Red Shield appeal and winter appeal each year.

Also we throw a few dollars each in their collection boxes. When they come around to the pubs and say G'day every Friday afternoon. Knowing the good work they do for the families of our farmers, who are all doing it rough with the drought.

is the salvation army Christians? (i hope not)?

is the salvation army Christians? (i hope not)?

The Salvation Army is a Christian denomination. Collection points and the places where food, clothing, and other goods are given to the needy are two distinctly different places. I am very sure that the agreement that allows Salvation army collection points to exist would not do so (be easily obtained) if they used those same places to distribute to the needy.

Keep in mind that _many_ panhandlers are professionals and do this by their choice for a living. On any given day, a "homeless" panhandler can collect $400 or more (per a study of the "homeless" done in several cities). The only reason they are tolerated is because shutting them down would be a violation of their right to "free" speech.

I strongly suspect the person you observed being rejected was looking for a source of cash for their next "fix" whether it be of drugs or alcohol.

The Salvation Army Religion?

The Salvation Army Religion?

The Salvation Army is a Christian denomination and international charitable organisation organised in a quasi-military structure. The organisation reports worldwide membership of over 1.5 million,[1] consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents known as Salvationists. Its founders William and Catherine Booth sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry by meeting both their "physical and spiritual needs". It has a presence in 126 countries,[2] running charity shops, operating shelters for the homeless, and providing disaster relief and humanitarian aid to developing countries.

The theology of the Salvation Army is mainstream Methodist although it is distinctive in government and practice. The Army's doctrine follow mainstream Christian beliefs, and its articles of faith emphasise God's "saving purposes". Its objects are "the advancement of the Christian religion… of education, the relief of poverty, and other charitable objects beneficial to society or the community of mankind as a whole."(3)

The Army was founded in 1865 in London by one-time Methodist minister William Booth. Originally known as the North London Christian Mission, in 1878 Booth reorganized the mission, becoming its first General and introducing the military structure which has been retained to the present day.[4] The current General of the Salvation Army is Linda Bond.

Blessing you with "googling" ability.
