Dance Day

Leap beautifully in mid-air, pirouette and groove towards the music for Dance Day. Whether it’s a sluggish waltz, a pacey swing, or you’re rocking to your favourite song, it’s about moving the body!

Describe your first day of dance class.?

I started dancing when I was 2, so I don't remember my first day ever. But I remember my first day at my new dance class when I transfered at 6 years old.

I was REALLY nervous. My parents had just been through a tough break-up and custody battle, so I was an emotional little wreck. I didn't want to switch schools at all.

I remember I was put in a class of kids older than me because my class was full. When we lined up to do across the floor moves I was scared because, if you've ever danced you probably know, that's when you're in smaller groups and everyone looks at you!

We started with kicks. When it was my turn I could feel my teachers eyes looking at me to make sure I was doing alright. So I just looked straight ahead and went for it. To my surprise she complimented me afterward!

It totally changed my attitude and since then I've always loved going to class!

My first day of dance is today what to do?

My first day of dance is today what to do?

First off, eat a good breakfast so you have energy, motivation, strength, and stamina. Eating a poor or no breakfast will make your dancing sluggish and weak, and you will not feel motivated or pay attention to the teacher, you'll just be cranky and hungry. I suggest something like eggs and toast, or waffles with strawberries on top, a banana, a glass of milk, or orange juice, etc.

Next, pull up your hair into a bun so that it is off of your face and neck, most dance teachers will be annoyed if you come in with your hair down or messy, because it is hazardous to you and other dancers to have your hair flying around while your spinning. Wear as little makeup as possible, dance teachers also do not like students wearing makeup, so if you absolutely must wear it, make it light and natural looking. For example, a swipe of brown mascara, and a peachy or nude colored eyeshadow, concealer or tinted moisturizer, a dab of peachy or fair pink blush, and some tinted chapstick.

Clothing: depending on what type of class it is, and what your teacher has instructed you to wear, but here's the basics: for ballet: strict teachers want you to wear a leotard, light colored tights, ballet slippers, and some kind of cover/skirt over leotard. Relaxed teachers, wear a tight fitting and preferably light colored yoga pants or tights, and a form fitting shirt of some type so that the teachers can see your muscles and lines while your doing moves, which is important b/c it helps teachers see if you're properly executing the moves. Jazz: jazz shoes may or may not be required, yoga pants or 'jazz' pants are usually worn in black or tan. A snug t'shirt or tank works.

Contemporary: pretty much the same as jazz, except jazz shoes may not be needed usually, I'd suggest a thin pair of socks, and some yoga pants w/ tank.

Now, arrive to your class fifteen minutes early, wait until you are instructed to enter the class. If allowed, stretch a little bit, for example: sit down with your legs straight, reach for your toes, roll your shoulders forwards and backwards, do lunges, etc. But this isn't totally necessary the first day as your teacher will most likely direct a warm up routine when class starts.

It's important to focus in class, try to stand in the front or middle, dancers who immediately got to the back the first day give off the impression that their not confident, not excited to dance, a bad student, unfocused, or want to be lazy. Listen carefully to your teacher and apply corrections quickly when she tells you you're doing something wrong, don't take it personally. Professional dancers get corrected 20 times a day, that's the ONLY way to become a better dancer, to improve your corrections!

Also, don't be too nervous, a tense body will have a harder time dancing gracefuly. Dance is about fun, freedom, expression, passion. So let go of all your stresses in life and insecurities, and just let your body feel the beat of the music and take over. Let your feet move you and passion fill you, smile and laugh, and have fun with it! Let dance class be your haven, something you look forward to and can let go in and escape to a fun passionate world!
