Richter Scale Day

If there’s ever each day to carry onto hats, double-test fundamentals and an ear out for rumblings deep inside the Earth, it’s Richter Scale Day. This occasion is definitely an acknowledgement and celebration from the birthday from the guy who trained the planet how you can measure earthquakes – Charles F. Richter.Born in 1900, the American earthquake obsessive (technically referred to as a ‘seismologist’), emerged using the Richter Scale in 1935, while in the California Institute of Technology. Since that time, the earth has had the ability to compare various earthquakes and investigate their relative energy for destruction. The Twentieth century’s greatest happened in Chile on 22 May 1960, calculating a magnitude of 9.5.Many people celebrate by reaching a lot of buddies to look at their favourite disaster films. 1974′s Earthquake, 1999′s Aftershock: Earthquake in New York and 2003′s The Core are preferred options.

An earthquake registers 6.1 on Richter scale

An earthquake registers 6.1 on Richter scale. What is the rating on an earthquake that is twice as powerful?

The Richter scale is logarithmic (base 10).

So an earthquake that is 10 times as powerful would be 7.1 on the Richter scale (log10=1)

An earthquake that is twice as powerful would be

6.1+log2 = 6.1+0.3 = 6.4 (approx)

An earthquake is usually measured by the magnitude M on Richter Scale.?

An earthquake is usually measured by the magnitude M on Richter Scale.?

No it' not Richter Scale. It is Shindo Scale.

Shindo Scale = seismic intensity scale

shindo 震度 = how much it shook, not the size of earthquake, but the shaking level.

I am Japanese and pretty much used to it.

Imagine the weather forcast.

Let's say, you check "rain" for the day,

you would care how much it rains (raining level, scale) in your town, not care about the size of rain clouds or atmosphere which is like "magnitude" , the size of earthquake.

If you have a friend in Fukushima, you would worry how he is, which is how bad the earthquake affects his town, right?

It's doesn't matter to know the magnitude of the earthquake itself.

You want to know how it shook, or how your friend, his house or town was shaken.

Shindo tells you the shaking level of each place.

If it's only level 1 or 2, you dont have to worry about him.

But it could be level 5 in somewhere else.

This is just like the rain. In NY, it may be raining hard, but in LA, could be no rain.

It may shake in Tokyo very hard, such as level 5, but maybe in Osaka it is only 1 or 0.

For us, shindo scale is very important.
