How did the modern day battery come about?

It doesn’t matter what sort of models we make or build these days most of them will use a battery of one sort or another. There are many types of cells that can be used to make up a battery that we can use to make things happen in a model. A cell is an individual unit and normally a few cells are coupled together to make up a battery. In some cases though a cell might be a battery on its own. The battery might be installed to power the radio control equipment and or to power the actual model itself. The right choice of cells can make all the difference as to how the equipment and/or the model performs.

There are two main types of cells, primary and secondary. All cells provide power by using chemical reaction. Primary cells like the carbon zinc type are made to be discarded when discharged. Secondary cells can have the chemical reaction reversed by recharging.

All secondary cells have a “C” (capacity) rating. This is the capacity of the cell that the manufacturer builds into the cell. As an example if we have a cell with a capacity of 1 ampere/ hour it should theoretically be able to provide a current of one ampere (amp) for one hour and its 1C rating is one amp. Discharging it at 10C would mean we are trying to get a current of 10 amps out of the cell.

In some cases where cells are packed to make up batteries they can be in series or parallel configurations. In series the cell voltages are added together to give the final output voltage. The current capacity stays the same. i.e. 3 lipoly cells of 3.7 volts each and 2200 Ma/h capacity wired in series will give a battery of 11.1 volts at 2200 Ma/h. If the same three cells are wired in parallel then the voltage will stay at 3.7 volts but the capacity will increase to 6600 Ma/h.

When using a laptop as a desktop replacement the battery should not be left in for long periods of time. The laptop will over time discharge the battery. Remove the battery – making sure that it is charged to 40% and store it in a dry, warm place. Ensure that it is wrapped protectively and nothing will be dropped on it.

The battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge. Leaving a battery in storage for longer than this without using could cause the battery to fully discharge as the circuitry of the battery itself consumes power.

Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.
