The town of Salem is the setting for the U.S. soap opera Days of our Lives. Personally, I love Mozart's operas, especially his final ones:

Die Schauspieldirektor (The Impressario)

-A short opera with only an overture, 2 (showcase) soprano arias, 1 trio, and 1 quartet. This opera calls for 2 (coloratura) sopranos, 1 tenor, 1 bass and several other speaking roles. There are 2 occurances of the high F, which can be heard 6 times in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute).

Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)

-One of his masterpieces and most frequently performed Italian opera, Le nozze di Figaro is an Italian comic opera (opera buffa) in 4 acts (duration of about 3 hours). It was very popular in Mozart's days. There are several beautiful arias and [vocal] ensembles. In spite of the sorrow, anxiety, and anger all the characters face, only one of the arias is in a minor key. (The other arias and ensembles are in a major key, which makes this opera extremely beautiful.)

Don Giovanni

-Arguably the best of Mozart's Italian operas, Don Giovanni is a dramma giocoso in 2 acts (duration of slightly less than 3 hours). Being a dramma giocoso, it encompasses both the comic (buffa) and the serious (seria) part of opera. It is also a staple of the standard operatic repertoire. The plot revolves around Don Giovanni, an extremely licentious Spanish nobleman, and the opera is about the last day of his life. There are several wonderful arias/ensembles (Là ci darem la mano, Sola, sola in buio loco, etc. ), including one of the most famous ensemble (apart from Là ci darem la mano), "Don Giovanni, a cenar teco".

Così fan tutte (Thus Do They All)

-The last collaboration with the librettist Da Ponte, Così fan tutte is an opera buffa in 2 acts. This opera calls for 2 soprano (1 dramatic coloratura soprano, 1 soubrette), 1 mezzo soprano, 1 tenor, 1 baritone, 1 bass and a chorus. Although not as famous as Mozart's former two collaborations with Da Ponte (namely, Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni), Così fan tutte does not lose out in terms of beauty. However, an acquired taste is needed to enjoy this opera.

Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)

-This is one of the best and most famous of Mozart's (German) operas. It is a Singspiel (literally a sung play) in 2 acts. Combining arias, ensembles and recitatives with spoken dialogue, this Singspiel is one of Mozart's masterpieces. The 2 arias by the Königin der Nacht (Queen of the Night) (namely [in increasing popularity], O zittre nicht, mein lieber Sohn... Zum leiden bin ich auserkoren [recitative and aria], and Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen) call for 5 high Fs (F6, in scientific pitch notation) in total, and are vocally challenging. There are also several other wonderful ensembles and arias, though not as many arias as his Italian operas. This opera is one of Mozart's works which show Mozart's use of song-like melodies for his music. This is certainly a must-watch for any opera lovers.

La clemenza di Tito:

-One of Mozart's last works, La clemenza di Tito is also a beautiful opera. As this opera was a commissioned opera, it had to be finished when Die Zauberflöte was still being composed. Amazingly, the music was claimed to have been composed in 18 days by Mozart's earliest biographer. Nevertheless, this opera comprises several wonderful arias and ensembles, and has a very unique musical style as compared to his other operas.

Also, I love Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio), a Singspiel in 3 acts. Having influence by Turkish music (which was popular in Mozart's days), this opera also shows Mozart's beauty of composition. With dazzling coloratura arias and wonderful ensembles, this opera is simply spectacular. It "goes down" all the way down to low D (D2 in scientific pitch notation) in Osmin's aria "O, wie will ich triumphieren", and goes up to beautiful high Es (E6 in scientific pitch notation) in Blonde's aria "Durch Zärtlichkeit und Schmeicheln". There are also extremely challenging vocal lines in Konstanze's arias, especially in "Martern aller arten" and "Ach ich liebte, war so glücklich", even more challenging than that of the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte.

I also enjoy operas by Salieri (eg. 'Europa riconosciuta'), Beethoven (who composed only one opera, 'Fidelio') and Rossini (namely, 'La gazza ladra' and 'Il barbiere di Siviglia'). However, I have not explored that much into opera yet. Nevertheless, I would still recommend operas by Mozart.
