I experienced a clicking sound from my diesel when stating it hot, I initially thought it was going to be an issue with the battery or leads only to find that the glow plug/preheat timer/relay (which apparently draws quite a bit of current) was making the noise. I found that it was not uncommon for this relay to make this noise if the motor is already hot when you try to start it.

is there max. limit of working hrs for any diesel engine( in boat) per day? or no limit to work continues ?

Diesels are usually rated in 3 ways.

Continuous Duty, where they are run at max output all the time

Intermittent Duty, where they can be run at max output for a specified time

High Output, where they are able to run at max output for a short period of time in a 24 hour period.

Continuous duty might be a generator or commercial fishing vessel that runs all day and night at the same speed and never shuts down for long periods.

Intermittent duty engines might be used in a patrol vessel and could be run at max rpm for 8 hours in a 24 hour period.

High output is typically used in a pleasure boat and might be allowed max rpm for 2 hours or less in a 24 hour period.

They could be based on the same engine block, but continuous duty would be rated at the lowest horsepower and high output would be the most.

Letting a diesel engine idle for long periods of time doesn't hurt it a bit .Not working it hard will not hurt it a bit. Your friend is an idiot. Do regularly scheduled maintenance and it will last a long, long time.
