Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day

On March 29th, 1848, ice obstructions triggered rivers to operate dry, and reduced the flow water to this kind of extent that Niagara Falls’ 3,160 a lot of water per second flow found a halt. Local people celebrate with Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day, and with lots of great hotels in the region, it’s easy in the future celebrate together!

HELP! My Sanyo digital camera fell in water!?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but turning it on while still not dry has probably stuffed it for good. Water is usually fatal to a camera anyway, but wet or damp running usually destroys any chance of a comeback. I managed to destroy a Chinon SLR camera at Niagara falls in the 80s, so I know how much it sucks.

You could take the battery out and leave it for a couple of days, but chances are it is borked for good.

Does anybody still use fabric diapers in these days?

Does anybody still use fabric diapers in these days?

Cloth is all we use. We switched to real diapers when my daughter, who will turn two on Thursday, was three months old. I couldn't have been happier. I hate trash. I hate buying something knowing that I will use it only once and it will then sit in a landfill and leech chemicals into the soil and water for all eternity. Also, I didn't like those chemicals and petroleum against my daughter's most sensitive area. (We did use disposables from Whole Foods when we went to NYC and Niagara Falls for a week. I didn't care for them, but at least I wasn't using the really awful ones with all of the junk in them. Also, the G Diaper liners work great, well better as they can be flushed and decomposed, for traveling, too.)

When we started with cloth, the initial expense was high, but in the long run, it has paid off. We don't have to worry about running out, or making special trips to the store (which means more gas and more money), etc. With washing them (putting them in the washer, transferring them to the dryer and folding), it only takes about an hour of my time every few days. I can't run to the grocery store and pick up a package of disposables for that amount of time.

We use a combo of the G-Diapers and the old fashioned tri-folds. We put the diapers into the G outsides by folding it into a long rectangle then folding the front over. (Since she has gotten older, we double the insides.) For overnight, we use the Kushies. (We got six for about $35 through Craigs List.) We've had to put extra liners in those as well, but it's worth it.

The women's group at my church is very big on supporting Lutheran World Relief. Somebody recently proposed that we start making cloth diapers from the Tshirt pattern on the Web site.

I actually thought about tyring to make a couple and then try them on my daughter while she is still in diapers. (We're in the beginning stages of potty training.) For that matter, I thought about using our old Tshirts and golf shirts and my old flannel shirts from high school that aren't too good any more (I was a grunger in the 90s; Wouldn't guess that by looking at me now) and making them for the next baby.

For me, it's not just about saving money. It's about preserving what God has blessed me with, sharing it with my child(ren) and others and doing what I can to make things last, to care for the earth with which God has blessed us, and doing everything I can not to use trash.

Things to do in Toronto?

Things to do in Toronto?

There's a downtown mall called the Eaton Centre that's an international tourist attraction for it's size and architecture.

So that's definitely worth a look -

Underneath downtown is a Guinness Book of World Records holder, the Toronto PATH -

(Which is handy to know about if you run into any rainy weather during your visit and would prefer to stay dry.)

Casa Loma is a fairy-tale castle in the heart of the city -

Toronto's Harbourfront is a popular destination -

Nearby are docks for the ferries that go out to the Toronto Islands -

For a bit of history, there's Fort York -

For some arts and culture, there's the Royal Ontario Museum -

And Art Gallery of Ontario -

A more comprehensive overview of what's available is this -

It's Tourism Toronto's maps & guides section to everything in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

Hope this helps and that you have a great visit!
