Is it worth studying Medical Assistance than nursing assistance?

Depending on your state, being a MA may not work to your advantage. If time is a factor....and some MA courses are approximately 9-12 months (the same as a LPN/LVN technical programs). You may want to weigh whether it would be more beneficial to get your LPN/LVN over the MA. MA's typically do not have the versatility that a LPN/LVN has. I don't know about other states, but in my state Medical Assistants are not licensed, and there is no recognition of a professional license for MAs. Therefore, MAs can only do certain things in certain settings. A MA in my state cannot pass medications or do anything medically related in a licensed nursing home, assisted living facility, residential care facility or day adult day healthcare programs. Some MA programs do not fully disclose to their students about what they can actually do once they graduate.

I agree with the previous poster -- what does radiology have to do with transcription?

At any rate, medical transcription could be a good career for you. Sometimes you will have to call a physician to ask about something, but not often -- not even an average of 1 call a day.

Medical transcription is far from going completely to voice recognition, as there are a lot of improvements to be made. Even then, transcriptionists will be doing the editing instead of the transcription, after that, so I see it being a stable career for a looong time to come.

EDIT: Oh, ok. Well if you are introverted, I don't think you'd enjoy radiology. They spend their day dealing with patients, touching them to help get them in the right position, etc.

Working and being a foster carer?

MOST at home opportunities are scams, but not all. There are a few things you can do from home. Our local internet service provider hires their employees to work from home, answering service calls, sales calls and technical support. I hear 1-800-Flowers does this and I know the Home Shopping Network does this as well.

I worked several years in the Medical Transcription field. It is legit, but there are a LOT of scam employers and schools in this field. It is a difficult job, but I loved it. It was challenging and I learned something new everyday!

If your hoping to get into this field you will most likely need training from an AHDI 'approved' program. Most employers require experience or participation in one of the top AHDI approved schools. If your looking into Medical Transcription pay the extra in tuition to attend an 'approved' school.

Many people have received training through inadequate programs only to find out that they are unable to find a job. AHDI sets the standards for MT courses. Employers know that graduates of these 'approved' courses have gained the skills necessary to begin their career as an MT. ------ AHDI is the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity - www.ahdionline.org (formerly known as the American Association for Medical Transcription).

I attended Career Step and recieved a job (at-home) less than a week after graduating. Career Step is an AHDI approved program and they are partnered with many of the major MT employers. In other words, their graduates get the jobs. Many companies require 2-3 years experience, however, a lot of these companies will waive this requirement if you graduate from the right school.

CS is partnered with MANY employers, it's self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than many of the other courses. Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program! Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online 'approved' course is the way to go. Choosing the right school is so important! They do offer financial aid and payment plans. :)

The US Department of Labor states "Employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow 14 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for medical transcription services will be spurred by a growing and aging population. Older age groups receive proportionately greater numbers of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that require documentation. A high level of demand for transcription services also will be sustained by the continued need for electronic documentation that can be shared easily among providers, third-party payers, regulators, consumers, and health information systems. Growing numbers of medical transcriptionists will be needed to amend patients’ records, edit documents from speech recognition systems, and identify discrepancies in medical reports."

"Wage-and-salary medical transcriptionists had median hourly earnings of $14.40 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $12.17 and $17.06. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10.22, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $20.15."

Best of luck!
