Brownie Day

Not too a reason is actually needed, but Brownie Day is a superb opportunity to bake a load of luxurious chocolate brownies. Serve them track of cream, frozen treats, toasted nuts or all of your favourite little luxuries to really make it an ideal moment!

Brownie "try-it day"

- note the quotation marks around try-it day. I got 604 hits. Three things that occur to me:

Light a campfire with just one match (a big kitchen one), no paper kindling allowed. Have everyone collect a grocery bag of dry orchard prunings or construction wood scraps, beforehand, for materials. Fire has to burn for [3/5/10] minutes to prove it worked.

Eat with chopsticks. Get some large cans of fruit cocktail, paper "Sample" cups and throw-away chopsticks at a restaurant supply house. Give each Brownie an ounce or two of the fruit cocktail, try her hand at using them.

Knots - have everyone tie a bowline around a low-hanging tree limb or swing set bar, using a sturdy length of rope - 3/4ths inch or more. Then have them swing on it, then untie it. (That is, loop of bowline around limb/bar, end hangs down, Brownie swings from end.) If it slips or is hard to untie, they haven't tied it right. Have a Phillips-head screwdriver handy to act as a marlinspike if needed.

Have pairs of Brownies, roughly equal in weight, tie two 6-foot lengths of 3/4-inch rope together with either a sheet bend or square knot, then play tug-of-war on a soft surface; again, if it slips or is hard to untie, they did it wrong.

Language Lesson - if you have more than one language in your area, have the Brownies learn to say "Good day" and "Thank you" in both (or all 4, or all 27, if you are in San Francisco).

If someone has a tuba, get a box of sanitizing wipes and let everyone her hand (mouth) at blowing a low note.

I was an Assistant Troop Leader for 7 years, when my daughters were Brownies and Juniors; at one point I was the only Girl Scout in the Muir Trail District who had a tattoo and a beard. I enjoyed them. Write via my profile if any of this isn't clear or you want other ideas.

Cappuccino Brownies with Espresso Sauce

Sauce:

2/3 cup whipping cream

1/2 cup whole espresso coffee beans

5 oz. imported white chocolate (such as Lindt), chopped

1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

Brownies:

3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) unsalted butter

4-1/2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, chopped

1 tbl. instant espresso powder or instant coffee powder

1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1-1/2 cups sugar

3 large eggs

3/4 cup all purpose flour

3 oz. bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate,

coarsely chopped

1/2 cup chopped toasted hazelnuts

Bittersweet chocolate curls

Powdered sugar

For sauce:

Bring cream and espresso beans to simmer in heavy medium saucepan. Cover, remove from heat and let steep 30 minutes. Strain into heavy small saucepan. Add chocolate; stir over low heat until smooth. Add nutmeg. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill. Before using, stir over low heat just until melted.)

For Brownies:

Position rack in lowest third of oven and preheat to 350°. Line 9-inch square baking pan with 2-inch-high sides with foil, overlapping sides. Butter and flour foil. Stir first 4 ingredients in heavy medium saucepan over low heat until smooth. Cool slightly. Whisk in 1 1/2 cups sugar and eggs. Stir in flour, then chopped bittersweet chocolate and nuts. Transfer to prepared pan. Bake until tester inserted into center comes out with moist crumbs attached, about 30 minutes. Cool on rack.

Using foil sides as aid, lift brownie from pan. Fold down foil sides.

Place 1 brownie on each plate. Cover with chocolate curls. Spoon warm sauce around brownies. Sift sugar over.

Did you know that today is national brownie day?

Yes its true. Everywhere I go there's a brownie. People give brownies away at sidewalks and checkout counters (beware, some of them may be funny brownies). People throw brownies at each other and at their cars as well. Some people even poop brownies. Its a happy brownie day.
