The most common arrhythmias include:--
* Premature atrial contractions (PACs)
* Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs)
Both of these arrhythmias usually are harmless.
Other common arrhythmias include:--
* Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT)
* Atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia
* Atrial fibrillation or flutter
* Ventricular tachycardia
* Bradyarrhythmias and heart block
ECG is done, but unless the recording is done while symptoms are occurring, it may not provide a diagnosis. Many cardiac arrhythmias are intermittent and show no fixed ECG abnormalities.
14 year old teen with Atrial fibrillation..?
Atrial fibrillation is a rapid, irregularly irregular atrial rhythm. Symptoms include palpitations and sometimes weakness, dyspnea (difficulty in, or laboured breathing), and presyncope. Atrial thrombi ( a stationary clot in the auricle) often form, causing a significant risk of embolic stroke. Diagnosis is by ECG. Treatment involves rate control with drugs, prevention of thromboembolism (the phenomenon whereby a thrombus or clot detaches itself and is carried to another part of the body in the blood stream to block a blood vessel there) with anticoagulation, and sometimes conversion to sinus rhythm by drugs or cardioversion.

If you had atrial fibrillation your physician would have known this from your electrocardiogram. Everyone has hundreds to thousands of aberrant heart beats daily. These may be hard, soft, early, late, skipped, dropped, singlets, couplets, short 'runs', supra-ventricular, or ventricular. The purpose of the Holter monitor is to determine whether or not your aberrant heart beats have any meaning. The purpose of the echocardiogram is to determine whether or not your heart murmur has any meaning. In all probability you are fine but please keep your appointments.
