i have the sickle cell trait?

trait generally is benign and causes no symptoms, however the significance is that you can pass the actual symptomatic disease to your children. but...in cases where a person has the trait and they are participating in vigorous athletics, exercise-induced dehydration and exhaustion can cause healthy red blood cells to "sickle" as in SSD. this can be very dangerous. please please be sure you are very well hydrated before the event with not just water but a sports drink like gatorade. do not smoke and cool off soon as you can afterwards. its also been documented that athletes with SST dont achieve the same level of performance as athletes with normal hemoglobin (your different genotype).

so in reality the difference is almost completely unrecognizable in ppl. but there are some things that you are more at risk for or could develop complications with as you get older. i would in no way worry about anything right now or in the near future except for finishing first place the last day of school and drinking lots of gatorade that day (but dont get a cramp!) and if you start feeling bad, slow down, or quit. wont be the end of the world and it wont hurt anybody.

and as far as fainting from the SST, maybe. maybe not. eat anything that day? if youre having periods, might want to have your blood level checked. or couldve just got too hot and hit the dirt! hope i was some help!

Do you support stem cell research or are you against it?

Do you support stem cell research or are you against it?

I am for all stem cell research except embryonic stem cell research.

Catholics believe that life is a sacred gift from God and needs to be treated with all human dignity from the moment of conception to the point of natural death.

For this reason, the destruction of living human embryos to harvest embryonic stem cells is immoral.

• The end never justifies the means

• A moral good can never come from a moral evil

Here are just a few of the common myths about Stem Cell Research:

Myth: Stem cells can only come from embryos.

Truth: Stem cells can be taken from:

• Umbilical cords

• The placenta

• Amniotic fluid

• Adult tissues and organs including bone marrow, fat from liposuction, regions of the nose and even dead bodies up to 20 hours after death

Myth: The Catholic Church is against stem cell research.

Truth: The Catholic Church approves three of the four types of stem cell research:

• Against Embryonic stem cells

• For Embryonic germ cells (from miscarriages)

• For Umbilical cord stem cells

• For Adult stem cells

Myth: Embryonic stem cell research has the greatest promise

Fact: Up to now, no human being has ever been cured of a disease using embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, have already cured thousands. There is the example of the use of bone marrow cells from the hipbone to repair scar tissue on the heart after heart attacks. Research using adult cells is 20-30 years ahead of embryonic stem cells and holds greater promise.

Based on the “The Ten Great Myths in the Debate Over Stem Cell Research” by Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D.

Adult stem cells are currently used for the medical treatment of:

• Anemias

• Cancers (multiple types)

• Child Leukemias

• Cornea Regeneration

• Crohn´s Disease

• Diabetes, Type I

• Heart Disease, Acute & Chronic

• Krabbe Leukodystrophy

• Liver Cirrhosis

• Lupus

• Lymphomas

• Myelomas

• Multiple Sclerosis

• Paralysis

• Osteopetrosis

• Parkinson´s Disease

• Rheumatoid Arthritis

• Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome

• Sickle Cell Anemia

• Spinal Cord Injury

• Stroke

• Systemic Vasculitis

• and more

I Have Sickle Cell Animea and My Period is Lasting for Two Weeks?

I Have Sickle Cell Animea and My Period is Lasting for Two Weeks?

Please go and ask your doctor these questions. It is important that you do, you are too young to have to deal with all this and only have a forum on the internet to ask.

Many women with SCD have painful periods. Female hormone changes probably affect the way sickle cells and blood vessels interact, but you shouldn't be menstruating for so long.

Take something for the pain, drink plenty, try and rest - and call your doctor's office. Don't leave yourself open to infection by being stressed, take care of yourself.

I wish you all the luck in the world and think you are a brave young lady "I always get bad cramps.. .. and I could easily deal with them."
