William Wilberforce was a chap from the city of Kingston Upon the River Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

He was an independent member of Parliament and was involved in the bringing about of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 unfortunately he did not actually see the act come into place as he died just two day before hand.

Wilberforce was an MP,and close friends with William Pitt the Younger,a prominent political leader of the day.

Wilberforce was the spokesman in Parliament for the abolition movement in Britain,and over the years he built a coalition of MPs that eventually gained enough support to get the Slave Trade Act of 1807 passed,which outlawed British involvement in the Slave Trade,and the Abolition of Slavery Act 1833, which ended slavery throughout the British empire.

So,it was Wilberforce that got Parliament to take notice and do something about slavery,on behalf of the abolitionist movement,so he had a huge influence on the movement in Britain.

In 1787 William Wilberforce dedicated his life to fighting slavery. He proposed the abolition of this "irremediably wicked" trade.

He was a young Member of Parliament in Britain. He'd spent much time agonising over the slave trade. Few of his contemporaries considered it wrong, let alone evil. Many feared global economic collapse if slavery was outlawed.

His stance was powered by faith in a compassionate and righteous God. Modern-day Christian groups, like Tearfund, continue the vision of liberation for those whose lives are made utterly miserable by lack of clean water, enough food, child labour and such-like evils.
