Tom thumb vs other jointed curb bits?

When you see a western shanked. leverage bit with a jointed mouth being called a snaffle, it is because the bitmakers think that the jointed mouth is what defines a snaffle. They are wrong. This was a misconception on the part of American cowboy bit designers that has persisted.

The term snaffle actually means "simple". The simplest bits are those that do not employ leverage. A snaffle bit is one with the mouthpiece positioned at dead center of the ring the reins attach to, so that force from the reins is delivered in a direct line with the corners of the horse's mouth. It may be an O ring, D ring, or eggbutt ring.

A snaffle bit can have a solid or jointed mouthpiece. What defines it as a snaffle is the fact that the reins attach to a ring directly in line with the mouth, and not even a half inch below it.

The American Tom Thumb design is just one example of many jointed mouth leverage (curb) bits. Tom Thumb just denotes shorter shanks, although these days you see long shanks on bits being called Tom Thumb snaffles.

Leverage arms (shanks) should never be combined with jointed mouthpieces. The mouthpiece of a leverage bit serves as the fulcrum for the arms to pivot on. It needs to be stable and solid in order to function correctly. When the leverage arms are pivoted back (shanks pulled back by reins), the fulcrum (mouthpiece) collapses instead of evenly pivoting in the mouth. The signals are all over the place, uneven, pinching and squeezing tissues into a tented nutcracker as the curb chain (needed to limit rotation) tightens and traps the lower jaw in a painful, tissue crushing vice.

So, any shanked bit with a jointed mouthpiece is a confusing and potentially extremely harsh bit, and it is impossible to deliver clear, refined signal through this bit design. When you choose to use a leverage bit, be sure it has a solid mouthpiece, and that you know how it is supposed to function and be used.
