Omg, yes! I remember doing those stupid dances in gym! Like the electric slide (Idk if that's square dancing) and then we did once dance to that dumb country song "Watermelon Crawl". Ridiculous. Why did they make us do that? ♥

Why did we have to square dance in PE?
I think that even back in the day that it was recognized that fitness could involve many kinds of activities.While you may not think of square dancing as P.E. you were actually physically moving,giving your heart and lungs a little stimulation.I never found much enlightenment at the time in gymnastics or the track events but looking back sports teach us about the importance of team work and doing our best.It can also teaches us about being a good sport, that we will not always win.Gymnastics and making up routines also let us be a little creative.P.E. also taught me that no one looked good in those one piece P.E. uniforms were had to wear. (For those too young to remember them. they almost looked like a one piece baby undershirt with bottoms but really puffy.They buttoned down the front with a belt to cinch it in a little ) LOL My grandson has just finished doing dance in gym and they didn't do the square dance, the kids did more current dances to keep them interested.They also had to do routines.Perhaps he current dance craze will be the future square dance in the past.
