Smoking 5 packs a day?

Hi friend, I'm 62 and I once smoked 40 a day. I only started because it was forbidden. I quit several times. The last smoke I had was in 1975. I need my caffeine and alcohol, and I still use too much of both. Dope? I can take or leave it. I used speed for a short time, but quit in 1970 after a bad experience. Please use whatever health lines are available in your country to help you quit. I'm guessing you live in the States. Here in NZ we get help from the government to quit smoking, like cheap nicotine patches. Nicotine is the component of tobacco that's addictive. It's all the other crap that kills you. Nicotine is only slightly harmful. Remember, when you apply for life insurance, they ask you if you smoke; not if you use any other drugs. I'm lucky; my body chemistry seems to allow me to leave tobacco alone, but not coffee, booze, KFC and other comfort substances. But smoking will just get more and more expensive and less socially acceptable. Soon it will be banned altogether, everywhere, so please work hard at quitting. Good luck, amigo.

Smokers, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?

Smokers, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?

I no longer smoke but I can still answer your question... it has only been around a year since I quit and still have the craves...

On an average working day, I used to smoke around 40 sticks. If I would drink after that working day, add another 40 sticks just for that drinking session alone so I would be smoking on average around 60-80 sticks a day.

In my case, it wasn't about pleasure anymore... smoking for pleasure was just waaaay back in the early days of my smoking when I was just a "social smoker". When I got addicted and became a chain smoker, it was to keep my body and mind "normal"... I couldn't work without it. Unless I had a lit stick in my mouth, the only thing that is going around my head is "I need a cig now!" and i won't start work unless I get that stick. Once that stick is finished, I immediately reset to the "needing a stick" mode again and won't get to focus 'til I get that cig.

Same goes with drinking. Every time I took a sip of beer, I immediately felt bloated and would only be relieved with a cigarette. 1 sip = 1-2 puffs of smoke. I could not enjoy drinking without smoking. Once I ran out of cigarettes, it's either I buy another pack or I stop my drinks.

After I eat, i had to smoke or else it felt like my stomach would explode from the food...

So in a nutshell, it was more of a "need" rather than "pleasure" since i thought it helped me focus. It was only when I realized it did the exact opposite-- that it takes my focus away and gives it back only when I satisfy the crave that it I saw it to be a burden and stopped it before it did more damage to my already bad lungs. I am still regretting that first stick I tried as a kid because i now have to deal with the difficult cravings every time they come up-- not to mention regretting the amount of money i wasted. =(

If you are thinking of starting, i would strongly suggest you don't. Your body won't look for something it hasn't tasted. I started with smoking thinking it was cool-- big mistake on my part. =(

smoking even a small amount can still cause all the illnessess that smoking causes, some people can smoke 60 a day and are relatively healthy and some smoke ten a day and get cancer or vice versa, Smoking is a lottery, you take your chances or you don't, and gamblers very rarely win.
