National Guard vs. Part time job to pay off student loans?

When you drill with the National Guard it is only one weekend a month and a few weeks of training in the summer. This means you could still have a part time job to pay the bills with. Many states (like Illinois) also allow National Guard students to attend state schools at no charge, so you would have a really great benefit right there.

As far as the "risk" of being deployed, that's what you want if you're in the military. Everyone in my unit is craving a deployment. Some troops were recently informed they would not be deploying with the main unit. It looked like a funeral. They were devastated. It would be like wanting to be a surgeon, but not risk seeing blood. It's difficult to explain to somebody not in uniform, but deploying is all we want.

When you break it down to dollars and cents, it really could go either way. You could land a really awesome part time job as a beer test-taster making $40 an hour, or you could see a general collapse from a heart attack on day one, do CPR and end up in the lime light for the rest of your time in the National Guard.

If you do choose to enlist, I would recommend looking into the MOS 68X, mental health specialist. It is the closest thing to Social Work and may provide so good connections and experience for your future career as a LCSW.
