Love Your Pet Day

How's your connection with your favorite furry buddy? Love Your Pet Day is an opportunity to reveal your cat, pet dog, tortoise or [insert various other] just how you really feel. Treats, pampering and all the the attention that the little person or girl can handle are a fantastic means to commemorate!

Why do you love pets?

I love my goldfish because I love the fact that I am able to maintain an ecosystem in such a small area. My husband loves the science behind it- testing and measuring ammonia and nitrites using chemicals, the most efficient way to produce good bacteria, different lights and fertilizers to grow plants, etc. I love picking out tiny little fish and watching them grow into 6+ inch monsters and seeing the surprise on peoples face when they learn that goldfish can get so big and live so long. I love all the varieties and colours- its like living art. I love learning about the best foods to feed them how to get them to grow as fast as possible. And we both love sitting there just watching them swim back and forth, so relaxing and peaceful after a busy day of work.

I love my pet rats because no matter what is going on in the world or how bad my day has been, they are always happy to see me. They are never too busy for me and the highlight of their day is when I play with them. The realization that I raised these little living things from tiny babies and watched them grow and change and that everything in their life and their very lives depend on me is an intense feeling. I am a bit creative so I love designing and decorating their cage and finding new things and sewing hammocks and everything- just another excuse to be creative. All that and just the fact they are sooo cute and fuzzy!

Love Birds as Pets?

Love Birds as Pets?

Lovebirds do make wonderful pets, especially if purchased young and hand tamed from a breeder. However, chances are unless you have some experience, you will not be able to completely and successfully tame a wild lovebird purchased form a pet store. This is not always true, and there are many cases of completely wonderful lovies coming from pet stores. Anyways, that aside If you are truley considering a love bird, I would chose a male. There is no way to visually tell a male form a female (unless you know some of the sex-linked color mutations) so this is another good reason to purchase from a breeder as many perform the DNA test to see if they are boys or girls. I say you should get a male because they are more likely to remain tame and sweet after they reach sexual maturity whereas females are known to become little "terrors" and become biters after a year an a half or so. I know many people with female lovies that claim this very thing. Therefore, when possible, for a pet, get a male. :) Lovies are also different in the sense that they can become "un-tame" fairly quickly for a parrot. They need to be handled very consistently to keep them tame. In other words, if you have a major test to study for and don't have time for your lovie for a week, it's possible this could set his tameness back a few steps. If you are willing to accommodate some of the love birds few quirks, I think they will be a wonderful pet. The key term that I like to tell people is RESEARCH! Do your research, know what to expect, and prepare for it. If all pet owners did this before purchasing pets, there would be a lot less overpopulation in shelters! Good luck!

Do you love pet rats??

Do you love pet rats??

Yes, I love pet rats. So much so that I have dedicated my life to them since 1997. I'm building a website devoted to them.

And every day I promote them as the best rodent pet.

Thank you, I will be joining your group in the next few minutes.

Edit:

Candy, let me talk to your parents via e-mail and I'll convince them that rats make the best pets. :)
