Is this true? The largest bear of all, a polar bear, has been killed by a .22 pistol?

Polar bears are not the largest bears. Alaskan Brown bears are bigger.

I've heard a couple of different versions of the story, but allegedly a bear that at one time held the world record, if it doesn't still hold the record, was allegedly killed with a single shot from a .22 Lr Stevens Favorite Rifle.

According to most of the stories, the bear was killed by an Eskimo or Indian woman. Supposedly the bear was attempting to force it's way into a cabin and the woman used the only weapon available, .22 single-shot rifle. As the bear poked it's head and forepaws through a window, attempting to scramble into the cabin, the woman stuck the barrel into the bear's ear and pulled the trigger.

Since the bullet lacked power to exit the bear's thick skull, it went bouncing around scrambling the brain and killing it instantly.

if you can manage to stick a .25 ACP bullet in someones ear, it will kill them instantly.

But if you stick it in his gut he is liable to beat you nearly to death and get out of the hospital before you do.

Listen Newell, as I've said before, the problem isn't that a .25 ACP can't kill a man. The problem is that it lacks power to stop a determined attacker. How much good will it do you if your attacker dies of peritonitis next week if he manages to slice you long, deep and repeatedly after you've shot him?

have you ever considered moving to a more reasonable place? have you yet decided o quit admitting to a felony every day or two?

BTW, who the hell told you that Guns & Ammo was "the most respected magazine in the shooting community?" Who ever it was, don't buy a used car or used gun from him! Most serious gun cranks I know, and i know plenty with national and international reputations, routinely refer to your beloved Guns & Ammo as Guns and Advertising. i know a couple of guys who quit writing for them because they would not give a glowing report on firearms that were crap.

Bears are mammals in the order Carnivora. Bears are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans, with the pinnipeds being their closest living relatives. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. That which pertains to bears is called ursine. Bears are found in the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Common characteristics of modern bears include a large body with stocky legs, a long snout, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and a short tail. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous, with largely varied diets including both plants and animals.

With the exceptions of courting individuals and mothers with their young, bears are typically solitary animals. They are sometimes diurnal, but are usually active during the night (nocturnal) or twilight (crepuscular). Bears are aided by an excellent sense of smell, and despite their heavy build and awkward gait, they can run quickly and are adept climbers and swimmers. Bears use shelters such as caves and burrows as their dens, which are occupied by most species during the winter for a long period of sleep similar to hibernation.

Bears have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur. To this day, they play a prominent role in the arts, mythology, and other cultural aspects of various human societies. In modern times, the bear's existence has been pressured through the encroachment of their habitats and the illegal trade of bears and bear parts, including the Asian bile bear market. The IUCN lists six bear species as vulnerable or endangered, and even "least concern" species such as the brown bear are at risk of extirpation in certain countries. The poaching and international trade of these most threatened populations is prohibited, but still ongoing.
