I think you might be looking into things to much. I'm just a few years older than you and living in here to and the type of looks if any that i get from old expats doesn't register in my brain let alone bother. infact between my home and the daily commute to work i don't even see that many. they mostly congregate around bars and nana.
if anything i think the above answerer is right and it could be a hint of jealousy towards you or something. a lot of them look like this all the time anyway or are that ugly and seedy that they look discontented permanently.
on the other hand i know of a great old guy about 73 that sits in the same bar all the time looking out at the road. at first glance you would mistake him for a bit of a grump but if you know the guy you realise he is actually a fantastic guy and great to talk to.
but really who cares about them. leave them to be grumpy sitting in bars alone with no friends. they are living in a different lifestyle and it doesn't cross with yours
