The Grammy Awards are to music what the Academy Awards are to movies. They're the highest awards given in the music industry.
The VMA's or Video Music Awards were started by MTV and is an awards show more for the fans.

what are grammy awards all about?
The Grammys are presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to the outstanding music of the previous year. The categories cover all genres of music (I think the current nomination count is 115 different categories). General awards are voted on by every member of the NARAS; genre-specific awards are voted on only by members knowledgeable in that genre (i.e., jazz awards are not voted on by people knowledgeable in heavy metal, or vice versa). Nominations happen in two phases, a nominating phase and then the "finalist" phase (the top five nominees that are read before the award is presented).
For all the problems they've had in Grammy history (the first "country" song of the year Grammy went to a folk song that NEVER made the country charts, giving Jethro Tull a "heavy metal" Grammy, Milli Vanilli), the Grammys still have the most prestige because they are voted on by people knowledgeable in the categories and NOT a fan-based award.
