The world well-known story, Monster, was originally composed by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley when she was 21; Frankenstein Day commemorates her birthday celebration, and celebrates all things Monster.
I must say that I have never read the book. I have seen the movie, of course. My present-day conception of this story is the way we once viewed various disabilities such as autism, dwarfism/giantism, manic-depression etc. Ignorance taught us that these people were monsters that did not fit into our concept of society which resulted in their being banned or institutionalized. Frankenstein's monster represented the unknown and ignorance not only in the medical world...but in everyday society.Today's "Frankensteins" explore into the unknown to educate us about the autism spectrum, manic depression and physical handicaps so that these people can assimilate into society and vice versa.
Frankenstein?
Dearest Father,
How shall I begin? Do you recall the day I was brought forth into this world mewling and covered with my crimson coat of birth? Did you feel pride father when they said it was a boy? Did you feel a sense of having contributed to my creation? That if it weren't for you, I would not be there squirming and squalling in my rage and helplessness at being thrust out from my warm home of 9 months? Did you father?
If you did, try to feel that way again father as I tell you what I have done, try to understand that I who have been denied a son, that I too wanted to feel that sense pride, of creation!
And I succeeded father. I SUCCEEDED!!!
I know what you are thinking, that to play with worms, rats and mice in my lab is not creating a thing, but father, it has been a long time since you have been to see me. A very long time. I have progressed from the simple things in life, the things that crawl, scuttle and creep in the dirt. I have progressed to MAN!!!
I have brought life to a man I put together myself from the dregs of society, culled in pieces from midnight trips to the cemetery, to the butcher here known as the local doctor, to the hospital morgue... Through accident or design, (I shall never know if God was laughing at me), my man breathed his first with a bolt from the heavens. My creation father! My pride!
Alas, perhaps the mind cannot be reanimated without damage for my creation went mad, quite mad and was destroyed by the incensed villagers. And now they have sworn to run me out of my lab father, to destroy all that I have worked for... I cannot bear it!!!
What shame have I brought to the Frankenstein name father? Can you forgive me? Do you feel any pride for my achievement or only embarrassment? Do you rue they day of my birth - of my creation?
Show me the way father!!! Fly to me in your swiftest carriage and let none delay you for you son needs you and desparately!!!
Victor
Who Is The Real Monster In Frankenstein The Modern Day Prometheus?
The creature Frankenstein made was the real monster.
Victor von Frankenstein did not intend to make a monster, he wanted to create a superman. But he could not accept his failure.
The monster may be a victim of circumstance, but its reaction is completely disproportionate. Yes, it suffers... but it is clearly a very intelligent being, capable of abstract reasoning and considering its actions.
But it kills, it kills out of revenge and hatred and spite, with no care for the victims, which are as innocent of his situation as he is, just to hurt its creator.
