Well, for myself, I married for love and companionship and my husband and I would like to have a child together one day. For many other people, I guess the same reasons. However, some in this society were taught to marry for:

-material gain: Having a spouse, especially a wealthy one is a way to obtain cars, homes, and other luxuries or some people are basically seeking a way to maintain their living without putting forth their own effort

-fear of being lonely: This is often true with women. They are taught that it's a woman major accomplishment in life to get married and have kids. It's a shame to these women to enter their late 20s, 30s and 40s never being married or as a divorcee. Women who adopt this idea often marry out of desperation and become long-suffering wives.

-sign of status: Some people are preoccupied with the idea of being married instead of thinking about their love for their spouse. For some, who they marry helps them in their career. A few get married because they view life as a competition and they get married or do other achievements for the sake of trying to impress family and friends, getting even with exes, trying to outdo others or they just measure their success by comparing themselves to others. In a nutshell, they see having a spouse as just the same as having a nice, new car, house or college degree.

I know these reasons sound like gloom and doom, but you've got to admit there are some explainations for why so many marriages end in divorce in contemporary western society.

When do guys usually decide they want to get married?

I think most guys want to get married, we just don't sit around all day fantasizing about the wedding like you girls do.
