Cartoonists Day

Cartoonists Day remembers the anniversary from the posting from the first colour cartoon, The Yellow Kid in 1895. Now cartoons really are a core element of many newspapers, guides and printed media, and also have had (and then have) a big impact on the culture.

Cartoonist moves to daily slot

Monday, February 20, 2006

Cayman Net News readers are in for a treat throughout the entire week from now on. They will be pleased to hear that our regular Friday cartoonist Clovis Brown will be taking a turn at the goings on in the Cayman Islands each week day.

Fans of the Friday funny, will be able to enjoy the comedic renditions of our irreverent cartoonist every time they pick up a copy of Cayman Net News, Monday through Friday.

From the Police Commissioner to the Leader of Government Business no one is safe from the caustic capers of Clovis’ pen.

A well-known and pre-eminent political cartoonist in his native Jamaica, Clovis is also a regular feature in the Jamaica Observer.

Since he began scribing for Cayman Net News in September of last year, he has captured many of our politicians and well known local faces, bringing a lighter side to the news of the day.

“Sometimes we need a cartoonist perspective when it comes to news and as our readers have been enjoying Clovis’ view of life here we felt is was a good idea to feature his work everyday and hopefully bring a few more smiles to Cayman,” said Wendy Ledger, Associate Editor of Net News.

What paint do most cartoonists/animators use?

What paint do most cartoonists/animators use?

Now of days cartoonists and animator (animators especially) use digital media to color and draw. Coloring animation by hand has become severally obsolete- however they use to use cells- essentially the would draw the drawings, then trace them on this clear paper, then paint the back sides of the paper to give it color. This process to FOREVER. (I'm not sure exactly what type of paint they used, ink, watercolor or acrylic seems most likely- not oil for sure.)

Today, the images for animation can be drawn and colored on the computer- no hassle.

Cartoonist, such as for comic strips used a varity of things. From watercolors, to inks, and often they would use half-tones. Never oils, acrylics, or pastels. (Cartoonist- I'm referring to people who draw for the Sunday newspaper and such-comic artists as well.)

However this is also mainly done on the computer now, (many comic artists still use paper, and ink though.) The computer is faster, cleaner and can be cheaper- depending. However, these mediums are still heavily used in other fields of art- just not fields that require excessive amounts of drawings and colorizations .

How does someone become a cartoonist?

How does someone become a cartoonist?

I also hope to become a cartoonist some day. I've been reading books about cartooning lately and have a few pointers. First, you should have a set of characters that you enjoy drawing to use in your comic strips. But if you feel that you cannot draw the same characters over and over again, then you should do single panel strips. Gary Larson's Far Side for example. After you have created several strips, you can attend a comic convention near you and seek expert advise. There you could meet people like you who are trying to make it big.

hopes this helps
