Older babies and massage?

I did baby massages too. Once she was older, it was only when she was tired and wanted to be in my lap would she sit still long enough for a massage. Now that my daughter is 3 years old she loves to be massaged and will come ask me for a back rub too.

Babies are born with underdeveloped tear ducts and most babies tear ducts form with no issues. However some babies don't clear properly and it ends up being clogged.

My daughters right eye showed signs of being clogged within her first week. It cleared itself up. Then her left eye showed signs of being clogged. So I did the massaging, eye drops and ointment. None of it worked and they give until the baby is 6 months before other measures are taken. At 6 months her wye still wasn't cleared, so we went to see an eye doctor and when she was 8 months old they did eye surgery to clear it up. Very simple procedure but she still had to be put under for it.

Just keep at it and hopefully it won't come to the surgery. Good luck!

I did a Baby Massage class with my son when he was a newborn and have kept it up. He's 11 months and is a wriggler too lol.

I find that with him, the best time of day is when he's relaxed and starting to wind down so usually I do it after his bath. I bath him, dry him, and then I do his massage as part of his bath/bed routine. He's normally more placid after ten minutes in a warm bath and more willing to lay there. After the massage I pop his jammies on, give him his milk, and then it's off to bed. I find he sleeps more soundly on the nights I do massage too, the bath on it's own relaxes him but the massage relaxes him even more.

You'll know him best and what he usually does at certain times of the day. After a bath works best for my son, but you might notice that your little boy is more still on a morning or after lunch or at exactly 2:15 - basically, look for the calmest point of his day when he's at his quietest and attempt it then.

Try to make the room as relaxing and calm as possible. If it's daylight then close the curtains or blinds to make the room a little bit dimmer (but still light enough to see), if it's night-time then turn on a lamp but drape a cloth over it to make it softer (muslin squares are ideal for this). Make sure the room is pleasantly warm rather than stifling hot. If you have any gentle, relaxing music then pop this on at a background-noise level of volume. Talk in a gentle voice and give out an atmosphere of relaxation. Have everything you need right there with you so that you don't need to get up for anything once you've started.

Keep at it because it's worth it. When my son is fussy when we're out and about I can calm him with a mini-massage on just one body part like his hands or his feet because he aqssociates it with feeling relaxed it brings him down a few notches and he settles. It's also wonderful for bonding and it makes me feel really close to him. If your son gets up during though and crawls away, then let him, don't push it. Even though my son is used to massage there are still times when he gets it into his head to crawl away and pick up the nearest shiny object rather than be massaged. I just let him go for that night and we start over from fresh the next night.

Best of luck :)
