What exactly happened w/ Joshua Chamberlain @ appomattox?

Appomattox wasn't a battle. It was the site of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E Lee to the Union Army of the Potomac under Ulysses S. Grant. This however was the signing of the articles of surrender. Lee's army had yet to surrender its arms and battle flags, which was still the practice of defeated armies.

Lee selected General John B. Gordon to lead the Confederate march to Appomattox to lay down their arms. Grant picked Brigadier General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain to recieve the Confederate surrender on behalf of the Union Army.

Chamberlian is best known for his service as a Colonel of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Battle of Gettysburg. He held off a force ten times as strong as his and possibly saved the Union army on that day, for which he would eventually win the Medal of Honor. Grant, however, was still laying siege to Vicksburg at this time and had no knowledge of Chamberlain.

His selection of Chamberlain to recieve the Confederate surrender comes from Chamberlian's service during the Petersburg campaign. Early in the campaign, he was seriously wounded and was promoted on the spot. He would finish the campaign in the Battle of Five Forks. In all cases, he served with great bravery and distinction, and it is likely for this that Grant chose Chamberlian over officers that he knew or liked more, to recieve the Confederate surrender.
