Does it matter what day you start birth control pills?

There are a couple of different methods that you can use when starting birth control pills. From what your doctor told you, it sounds like your doctor is going by the quick start method where you can just start taking the pills right away. The package insert that comes with the birth control usually has stickers to help you keep track of what day of the week that you started your pack. Try to take the pill around the same time every day. It does not matter what time of day (morning or night) and it also does not matter if you take it with food or without. It may be helpful to make it part of your routine (i.e. brush your teeth and then take your pill).

There are also a few different types of birth control pills. Most of the time the pills will come in a package of 28. The first 21 days are the “active” pills and the last 7 are an iron pill. You will get your period in the last 7 days. It is important to follow the directions your doctor gave you, but most of the time, you will take one pill every day until you finish the entire pack. Once you finish a package, you then start again with the new package. It also does not matter what month we are in for you to start taking the birth control pill. Although February does have less days than all the other months, this will not matter because you will just take one pill every day. In other words, you do not need to finish one pack of birth control pills in one month. Sometimes, the package comes with 21 pills. If this is the case, you would take one pill each day. For the next seven days, you would not take a pill and during this time is when you would get your period. Once the seven days are finished, you can start the new package. Again these are general instructions, so if your doctor gave you more specific instructions on how to take your birth control, follow his/her directions.

It is also important to know what to do if you forget to take a pill. For most birth control pills, if you miss a day, you can take 2 pills the next day without needing to use back up birth control methods. If you miss 2 days in a row, for the next 2 days you can take 2 pills each. However, if this does happen, you should use a back up method of birth control (i.e. condoms) for at least 7 days. There are many different types of birth control pills and it may depend upon which specific type you are taking. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist and they will be able to tell you more specifically.

As you appear to be a female, I take it you've never been married. When you do get married, or if you already are married, do you think you would believe your husband truly loves you if he said, "Does it really matter what day I remember to take you out for our anniversary? As long as I take you out one day a year for our anniversary, isn't that good enough and shouldn't matter if I can't remember to do it on the correct day?"

God said to remember the seventh day -- not the first. True love will remember it on the correct day.

@Hogie: you're correct; God does not deal with us illegally. So, stop dealing with God illegally and from a position of ignorance (which is NOT innocence). Go back to your Bible and look up the New Covenant given to Christians (Hebrews 8) and you'll discover that it is *still* based on God's Law (verse 10) -- not on a new law, nor on no law. The Bible says that the only difference from the First Covenant (which physical Israel broke; verse 8) is that the New Covenant is for spiritual Israel (Galatians 3:29) and is based on "better promises" (verse 6).

God bless.

The label doesn't actually matter- it's all the same pill. It's more to help you keep track. I'm off my week starts on Tuesday instead of Sunday, I just take the Tuesday pill and come back for Sunday and Monday at the end of the week.

To Pepper Tea- call your GYN to be sure. With my brand it does not matter (from my GYN) I have the 4 periods a year pill. I would take Monday today, and just get your period a day earlier then you would before rather than skip the pill for Sunday.

"Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. When the pills run out, start a new pack the next day. You may get pregnant if you do not use this medication regularly." (It doesn't say to be specifically in order. I think it would if the levels were different)

"If you miss one "active" pill, take two pills on the day that you remember. Then take one pill per day for the rest of the pack." (Since you don't have an extra pill, definitely take one today)

****If you're not sure if the levels are different, you can take another weeks Sunday and call your doctor to find out for sure. But I personally have been told that the active pills are all the same hormone level.
