Hiking for 12 days at 7.5-13.5 miles per day at Isle Royale...is that crazy?

In the marines we would hike with gear about 12-15miles a day sustainable...that's with 65lbs packs. We were in tremendous shape...the problem is carrying eough water...it weighs so much...to hike that many miles you have to drink a lot and eat alot of calories too...not sure how you plan to get water, etc. or what you plan to carry but if you go light and have access to water it shouldn't be a problem...when hiking long distances you must take care not to twist an ankle when your legs get tired...wear good boots...good luck

Best hiking boots for hot days?

Best hiking boots for hot days?

Nylon, mesh and split-grain leather boots and shoes are breathable and lightweight, making them ideal for warm-weather day hikes. Hiking footwear made from these materials is easier on your feet and generally takes less time to break in than heavier boots. Plus, boots made from split-grain leather are less expensive than ones made from full-grain leather, making them the perfect investment for the casual hiker. On the downside, nylon, mesh and split-grain leather boots are not as water-resistant or durable as full-grain leather footwear. However, waterproof linings are available to provide a higher level of waterproof protection in these boots.

Columbia footwear has a great selection and the site I am about to post really helps you narrow it down.

Have a fabulous time!

Three or four day hiking excursions in eastern US?

Three or four day hiking excursions in eastern US?

The beginning of May would be a great time to visit the Linville Gorge area. I don't know if you're familiar with the Appalachian Trail but it runs right through that area and there is great hiking along it.

A place adjacent to Linville Gorge and, more remote, is Wilson Creek. There are tremendous hiking opportunities there and the scenery is wonderful. The water that flows through Wilson creek comes down from the Linville Gorge area actually.

Here are a few links for you to learn more about the Wilson Creek area.

These links should give you loads of info about hiking opportunities along the Wilson Creek area. I have hiked many of the trials along Wilson Creek and most take you either to or past waterfalls of some sort. The hiking isn't too tough but there are some steep areas that you need to be in good shape for.

Hiking around the Linville Falls area is wonderful too and give you chance here and there to take in wonderful views from high up. It feels like being in a airplane in some places because of the high elevation. Nearby is Grandfather Mtn and there are wonderful trails there too.

Table Rock is another place very near Linville that has awesome hiking and wonderful views. Here are some links to photos and info about Table Rock.

I have a few photos from a visit to Grandfather on my flickr photostream and you can take at look at them here

I live near the Wilson Creek area and If you find it interesting and I can get you more info I'd be happy to help.
