The Smithsonian American History Museum is a neat place--filled with important artifacts of America's past, from a huge steam locomotive to the shoes that Dorothy wore in the Wizard of Oz. It's located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and is open every day except Christmas. Admission is free. It's one of about a dozen museums operated by the Smithsonian.

How many days should I plan???
3 days for the quick tour, and 5 if you want a more detailed tour of the museums. Eat in Georgetown, there are a lot of great restaurants. Don't miss the FDR memorial and the WWII memorial, both are impressive. The Holocaust museum is very moving and emotional but a can't miss. Learn the Metro to maneuver through the city, a one day pass is only around $7
how many days are enough to visit NYC, Boston, and Washington DC all together?
2 days in Washington (check out the Smithsonian museums, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Washington Monument, the National Zoo and subway it over to Arlington National Cemetery)
3 days in New York (TOO MUCH here in various places...Times Square, Statue Of Liberty, Empire State Building...the "waterfalls" exhibit going on....plenty more!)
2 days in Boston (downtown area, Cambridge/Harvard)
One week should do it!
