how long do you read a day?

I read about 5 hours, especially when I'm in the middle of a really good book and just have to get to the next part.

Yesterday I found this book in my moms basement called Covenant With The Vampire by Jeanne Kalogridis, which was about Dracula's family.

Anyway, I started reading at about 11:00 and couldn't stop it was so good! I stopped reading at about 6 and, of course, by that time I had to get up for school and I felt awful all day but it was worth it!

Why do a lot of people not read books now days?

Why do a lot of people not read books now days?

I have noticed that a lot of young kids have returned to reading in the last few years, whether it is because of the The Harry Potter Series or the Twilight Series, but there has been an increased interest in reading. Of course the cross-section of the majority of young adults and the young kids would rather watch television or play on the computer. These two things are much easier than sitting down and reading a book. Reading takes some time and effort. You are not being spoon-fed like when you are watching television. I believe the greatest factor in people not reading is Laziness.. Yes, Laziness! Laziness is this centuries curse. In this instant society, everything has to achieved instantly and to sit down and read a book that requires concentrating for hours, days or weeks on end just does not hold that special fascination to the majority of people any more. Television and movies are fast, and gratifying. There seems to be a competition between the theater and television and books.

A little while back, I heard several young girls commenting on how much they loved the movie "The Notebook" and "A Walk to Remember" and I asked them if they had read the books based on the movies and told them the writer's name was Nicholas Sparks and he had several good books he had written. They looked at me, like I was nuts, why would we want to, they replied, we saw the movie. Why would we? If you listen close enough, you will hear it many other times over and over again...I asked the same question with "Gone with the Wind", "Cold Mountain" "Angela's Ashes" and so on, and it has always been the same answer. "Why would I, I saw the movie?"

I am not saying we should stop making movies. But if there are going to be movies, there are going to be those who will lazy it out. I myself do not like watching television and rarely watch movies, but I have read hundreds of books literally. Times have changed yes, but if writers keep writing great books we will always have a following, as we have seen with Harry Potter and Twilight.

What’s good reading these days?

What's good reading these days?

Funny how people don't read the whole question before they say Twilight, huh?

Anyway, I loved Mary Roach's books, Spook, Stiff and Bonk. All of them take a fairly irreverent look at subjects that aren't necessarily mainstream. Spook is about the afterlife, Stiff is about what happens to our bodies when we die, and Bonk is about sex. She's funny in parts and fairly informative.

The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin was about the sudden blizzard that descended on unsuspecting American settlers in 1888. Tragic and touching with a lot of first hand accounts.

The Glass Castle by Jeanetter Walls is a memoir of her growing up with scatterbrained and eccentric parents. Some humor, mostly sad.

Marley and Me by John Grogan...was a funny, sweet and touching story. Seems like a good choice for a rainy day.

The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston about Italy's version of Jack the Ripper. Really interesting. A little gory.

Candyfreak by Steve Almond is written by a serious chocoholic. Think Willy Wonka but a little more manic and a little less odd.

And Dead Reckoning by Michael Baden about the forensic steps in catching a killer. Might not want to read if you're squeamish. Just something that really interested me.

I also agree on the Radioactive Boy Scout by Ken Silverstein.

Hope this helps :)
