Why does the National Health Service work so slowly?

i know how you feel. i'm a nurse in the NHS and what you describe is unfortunately, common. basically, it's down to lack of staff, lack of communication, and basic human error. no wonder people complain about the NHS, but until it gets a complete overhaul and more staff, not just medical staff but admin staff too, it won't get any better. the thing is the NHS is known as being low paid regardless of whether you work on the health side or the admin side, and good admin staff won't work in the NHS when they can get better pay working elsewhere.

Employment laws? unfair treatment of wait staff?

Employment laws? unfair treatment of wait staff?

sounds like you are being ripped off. Check out the direct gov website section on employment - it sets out all the rules and regulations. I suspect that they are not paying any body's tax, in which case they need to be reported. Get advice from your local CAB (Citizen's Advice Bureau) as soon as you can - they offer free help but it is quite hard to get an appointment.

As there is no paperwork it may be hard to prove what you have been paid and work out what should have been paid in national insurance contributions and tax. Keep any records that you have such as work rotas or get copies (discreetly) if you can. The bottom line is that you have probably lost money in this job - look for another honest employer and tell your colleagues to do the same.

They may be happy if they think they are getting away with avoiding tax but they will lose in the long run - they won't be able to claim JSA if their employer has not been paying their contributions for example. In your case you might be able to reclaim some of your tax back when you leave if you have not earned the tax allowance amount - but only of course if your employer has paid it in the first place. Please report them once you have a new job - we can do without employers like this.
