My budgie just abandoned FERTILIZED eggs that I have never touched.?
It is a myth that when a human touches an egg or chick, the pair that is caring for it will abandon it. I have read several National Geographic magazines that can concur on this! Also, as my job, I have weighed baby chicks and eggs more than ten times, the mother has never abandoned them.
If your female budgie leaves her eggs, mother knows best. She can detect any movement inside, if there was a deformity in the chick, the female will abandon it. If you candled an egg before the baby inside begins to develop in the embryo, you can never be too sure if it is fertilized or not. Or, if the egg was fertilized, perhaps the time between you candled it and the time the female abandoned it, the egg simply died for unknown reasons.
If you want your pair to mate once more, wait a few months before allowing them to begin the mating process again. Do not use a new pair, if the male and female has gone this far to breed, there is no reason in using a different one. To prevent egg-binding boiled egg with the shell works very well, the protein really helps. Also, broccoli has alot of vitamin A your bird can use.
