Are you French? what's the common french dish? In general, what the French people eat every day for lunch or ?
Yes. There is a variety of common dishes which are specific to certain regions, but no special national dish. In general one eats a meal with a balanced content of meat or fish with fresh vegetables and there always is bread on the table. Meals often start with some kind of soup, and one of the most famous is French onion soup.
A common dish is "Coq au Vin" which is chicken that has been cooked with white wine and vegetables. There also is "Blanquette de Veau", which is veal with white sauce; "Boeuf Bourguignon" consists of chunks of beef slowly stewed in the oven with vegetables and a dash of red wine; "Poule au Riz" which is chicken with rice and mushrooms. A dish often served at the seaside is "Moules Marinières" which are mussels steamed open with shallots, herbs, and a dash of white wine, and they are served with "frites" which are slim french fries; "Sole meunière" is sole that has been battered before being fried. In Alsace a favorite dish is "Choucroute", which is pickled cabbage served hot with an assortment of saucages. Not everyone eats a large meal at lunch time or in the evening. Often people are satisfied with a "salade composée" which is salad made with a variety of leaves to which other ingredients have been added such as nuts, dried saucage, bits of bacon, or prawns. La "salade de chèvre" is a green salad with goat cheese melted on toast, and "la salade niçoise" is a mixed salad with anchovies, tuna, and hard-boiled eggs. Simple "omelettes" are made with eggs and can be filled with cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms, ham, or other ingredients."Nouilles" (pasta) are often served with as simple sprinkling of cheese, or a knob of butter and a sprinkling of herbs, or chopped ham. In Brittany they make huge but very thin pancakes that are filled with savoury or sweet fillings. In coastal towns a large platter of "fruits de mer", consisting of various shellfish, is served, and these are eaten cold with people round the table sharing. In Provence they have a fish stew called "Bouillabaisse". In the country some people just have soup with bread and cheese. Un "croque-monsieur" is a ham and cheese toasted sandwich and, when topped topped with fried egg, is called "un croque-madame". There are hundreds of different regional cheeses. Some people believe that escargots (snails) and Cuisses de grenouilles (frogs legs) are common dishes in France, but is is not true. I am French and only have eaten them once or twice in my life and that was in restaurants and never at home.
There also are various sweet dishes served for puddings such as "Tarte Tatin" which is upside down apple tart,"Tarte au citron" which is Lemon Tart, "Créme au caramel" and various custards made with coffee or chocolate, and "Baba au Rhum" which is a kind of doughnut soaked in a rhum based sauce. "Crépes" (thin pancakes) are a favourite sweet and are served with all sorts of fillings from melted chocolate and nuts to red fruit jams and even with dark sugar and Cognac (brandy).
