Museum Day is really a celebration that's held every year around or on 18th May. Every year, the Advisory Committee from the Worldwide Council of Museums (ICOM) defines a particular theme for Museum Day.

Are shops/museums open on Easter day in London (city centre)?

Are shops/museums open on Easter day in London (city centre)?

On Easter Day, large shops are legally obliged to stay closed (this is the law throughout England and Wales). So although small boutiques can open, the landmark stores in central London will all be closed.

However, all the big museums are open. (They are actually open every day of the year except for Christmas, 24-26 Dec).

So at the very least, you can visit the Natural History, Science and V&A museums in South Kensington, plus and the British Museum, National Maritime Museum/Royal Observatory and the historic royal palaces.

EDIT:

Because you have an answer here that says the exact opposite of this, I've double-checked all this info (I was planning to go museum-ing over the Easter weekend with friends anyway, so it was time well-spent!)

Confirmation about the law re Easter Sunday shop closures:

Opening hours for (some of) the museums - they all follow pretty similar lines.

(the research library is closed over Easter but everything else - Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory, Maritime Museum etc - is open)

When is the best time of the day to visit a museum?

When is the best time of the day to visit a museum?

Avoid going to a museum on a weekend or holiday.

Museums are usually crowded due to teachers going there with their students on a class trip. Therefore---

When school is in session, the best time to visit a museum is in the month of September when hardly any teachers plan class trips.

At other times during the school year, go after 2PM when the kids have to get back to school for dismissal.

If you have to go on a weekend, go when the museum opens first thing in the morning.

Museums can also be crowded due to tourists so avoid museums Christmas week, Thanksgiving week, Easter/Passover week, Presidents Day week, and July and August.

Bottom line----depending on the month, day, and time of year, it can be better to go in the AM or wait until after 2PM
