Guide dogs are among probably the most phenomenal creatures in the world, and also the difference they create towards the lives of individuals without sight just can't be overstated. are you serious, hiding the dog to cross international borders ??? why ??? does the dog not have shots ??? then get the dog the shots ... if you can afford to go on vacation you can afford the dog a rabies shot ... geesh

i am sure you are on drugs now, i just told you, you need a rabies certificate from the vet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"If you bring a pet dog or cat at least three months old from the United States, you must have a certificate to show that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies within the last three years. The certificate has to be dated and signed by a veterinarian, and it must identify the animal by breed, age, sex, coloring, and any distinguishing marks. Animal tags are not acceptable in place of certificates.

If you bring a pet dog or cat under three months old from the United States, or a guide dog from any country, you do not need a certificate, but the animal has to be in good health when it arrives.

Is a German shepherd a good dog with all round skills?

No - a German shepherd is a person.

My breed's real name translates as German Shepherd Dog - 3 words in the breed-name, so 3 capital letters needed; and GSD for short, not Gs.

Can you imagine any breed becoming the world's most popular dog, plus serving as a film star, guide dog, herding patroller, obedience competitor, police dog, search&rescue dog if it didn't fit ALL of those things you list?

But BECAUSE it is so popular there are bite-is-all and coat-is-all and pet-is-all and show-is-all people flat out ruining the breed. To paraphrase Charles Dickens: "It is the best of breeds, it is the worst of breeds."

So WHERE you get one, and WHICH one you choose, and HOW you rear it, are mighty important factors.

Most dogs registered as GSDs don't fit the International Standard of the GSD (the rebel nations of Britain, Canada, the USofA each independently invented a rebel "Standard" of its own - as if there can be 5 or more DIFFERENT blueprints for the SAME house or car or breed!) Most get a sneer-title as AlsatiOn or German Croucher or NAmerican Ski-Slope Dog or Off-coloured Crap or Prick-Eared Basset or Titanic Tail-Tucker, depending on which exaggerations they feature.

• Add to your browser's Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.

Click its Links tag, then scroll down to Defining_a_GSD and work your way through that set of links. If a pooch can't pass all the first 4 steps (better, the whole lot), it doesn't matter that it is a show champion or a Grand Victor, it is NOT a genuine GSD.

If it CAN do that, then it IS a genuine GSD, although there might be other GSDs better than it for agility or colour or determination or gait or shape-&-proportions or size.

Perhaps a better question would be "Are YOU suitable for a GSD?"

To get a pup from me people MUST:

• Have a door opening straight into a yard fenced to not just keep their pet home, but to also keep stray dogs and stray brats OUT.

• Have a plan for where the pup will sleep that does NOT involve hours in a locked crate. Growing pups need to exercise the whole time they are awake. They also NEED to go toilet often.

• Be able to stay home 24/7 for at least a week (preferably a fortnight) starting the day they get the pup. This is so that the pup can come to trust its new family, and so that the owner can learn its timing & signals for "Wanna go toilet!" and "Wanna BITE something!" then instantly take appropriate actions.

• Be willing & able to attend weekly training-club classes starting when Pup is 18-22 weeks old, and send me their first graduation certificate. Only there does an experienced instructor coach your use of "the voices", posture, balance, timing, rewards vs reprimands; at the same time, your pup learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing. Forget pet-shop play-groups.

• To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group's Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

How can I make contact with a seeing-eye dog association?

The waiting lists for such dogs can be quite long. They usually prioritise giving the dogs to children with disabilities, and in the majority of cases the original puppy raiser gets first choice as to whether they would like to keep the dog. They usually require that you agree to allow the dog to live inside. While these dogs do have great temperaments, and have had obedience training, all of this can be largely undone if you do not keep up the work. These dogs require plenty of exercise and above all mental stimulation, and they definately need to be an active member of the family. They have spent a great deal of time with people their whole lives, and will not cope being left alone all day while people go off to work and the like.
