Will a American Idol artist ever be a be a Legend in music ?
First of all, I'm honestly not sure if anyone around these days will still be big 20 years from now because today the record labels and music fans are so fickle that by the time someone gets big, someone newer and shinier comes along and everyone runs to that person until someone even newer and shinier comes along. Plus there's so many people trying to make it now that it's hard for anyone to really stand out anymore and eventually everyone starts to look and sound the same (look how many people are starting to look and sound like Lady Gaga already), so I think we'd be lucky if ever see another MJ or Madonna again.
Anyway, though, I'm not sure about future legends, but we already have some greatly successful artists who came from the show (and they're not all Pop singers. The show has also opened doors for Rock, R&B and Country singers). Our first winner Kelly Clarkson got her start on the show back in 2002 and remains one of the top selling female Pop artists around today (with a total of 10,550,000 in sales). Carrie Underwood (who won in 2005) remains one of the top selling Country artists today (with a total of 11,581,000 in sales) and has won countless AMAs and Grammys. Chris Daughtry (4th place season 5) and his band Daughtry went 4xPlatinum with their debut album, which was named the #1 selling album of 2007 and is the fastest selling Rock debut in Soundscan history (their second CD released last year has been certified Platinum). Jennifer Hudson (7th place season 3) became the first crossover success, having not only a Gold record, but an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA award, an NCAAP Image award and an SAG award (for her role in 2006's Dreamgirls). And Adam Lambert's debut only went Gold in the states (though many, including me, expected him to sell much better), but it was certified Platinum in Canada and New Zealand (his single for "Whataya want from me" went Platinum in the states, though, as well as in Australia and it went 2x Platinum in Canada). And just prior to his mentoring on Idol, he was on an international promotional tour, in Canada, Japan, Britain, Australia, etc, making him the first "International Idol" (as Simon Cowell predicted). He also sang the theme song to last year's 2010 and has gotten the covers of Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone Japan, Details, Billboard (with Kris Allen), etc. So though he didn't sell quite as many CDs as the others, I think he's still pretty successful. Anyway, again, I'm not sure who will still be big in 20 years, but if anyone is, it'll most likely be one of these 5. Even if you've never watched a single episode of Idol, I'm sure you'd know who these 5 are, whether you knew they came from the show or not, so i think any of them has the chance to still be around at least for a while longer.
As for whether they would've made it in the industry without Idol, I don't know, though. As I said, the record labels and music fans these days are very fickle. Kelly Clarkson actually tried to make it on her own, but that was back when it was all Britney, Christina, Jessica, etc., and she didn't fit into that mold, so the label told her that they couldn't "sell her" (I bet they're kicking themselves now). And Crystal Bowersox this year is amazing (I could see her having a pretty successful career), but, unfortunately, she probably wouldn't have had a chance making it on her own because she doesn't fit into the whole Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Beyonce mold that's big right now. Sadly, the music business isn't about talent anymore, it's about image. So just because someone has trouble making it on their own, it doesn't necessarily mean that they weren't good enough (sometimes they're better than the ones who did). It isn't how talented you are, it's just a matter of whether you get discovered or not. So that's why I'm glad that American Idol exists because it discovered the great talents of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, etc, who may not have been discovered otherwise.
