The United Nations in 1985 adopted, , certain guidelines to achieve the objectives of maintaining protection for consumers and to establish high level ethical conduct for those engaged in production and distribution of goods and services.

High prices, duplicate articles, underweight and under – measurements, rough behavior, undue conditions, artificial scarcity are some of the ways by which consumers are exploited by manufacturers and traders. Limited information, limited supplies and low literacy are factors causing exploitation of consumers.

Most places of employment do not divide their new hires into risk categories. Either they offer employees health insurance or they don't. You need a job with health insurance and then in 30 or 90 days when the health insurance kicks in you can go to the dermatologist. I recognize that getting a job with health insurance is much harder to do than say, but I'm just pitching out options here.

Another option would be to read the newspaper or watch TV for free skin cancer clinics where they give evaluations to anyone who comes in. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month so this is the most likely time of year for these free clinics to be advertised. It might be worth calling your local hospital for leads, especially if you live near any large teaching hospitals. good luck

Smoking awareness Game/activity?

Every cigarette you smoke knocks around 6 minutes off your life expectancy (This was demonstrated to me when I sold life insurance as a guide as to how much premiums should be increased to allow for earlier death). That means that anyone smoking 10 cigarettes a day loses 1 hour of life. In 24 years that's a year's life lost. Ask the students to calculate how much life expectancy is lost for the following:-

A 20 year old smoking 10 cigarettes a day for 40 years

A 30 year old smoking 15 cigarettes a day for 30 years

A 40 year old smoking 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years.

Assume they start to smoke on their 20th, 30th or 40th birthday and would expect to live normally to age 75.

Answers:

20 year old will by 60th birthday, have lost 1 year and 8 months life

30 year old will by 60th birthday, have lost 1 year and 10 1/2 months life

40 year old will by 60th birthday, have lost 1 year and 8 months life
