This information has been given to me by a career soldier.

(Not US military but I can't see why things would be so much different between nationalities.) These days our soldiers are taken home but at the time you're referring to this is what happened.

On the battlefield -

Every soldier has 2 dog-tags, one is placed in the dead soldiers mouth, for later identification. Or if that's not possible placed somewhere in, not on, the body. The other is taken by the finder and the grid reference recorded as to where that particular soldier fell. This information will be given to the unit commander or similar, who ever is still alive.

Later a clean-up crew come through. Depending on the outcome of the battle, either your side or the enemy.

Hopefully, the majority of the bodies can be ID'd by their dog-tags.

They may be temporarily buried at that spot (which is recorded) and then moved at a later, safer time. But they are usually buried in the military cemetery dressed as they are found. Weapons such as an officers pistol would probably be removed but the rest would stay with the body.

Obviously, not all graves contain an entire body.

Sadly, that's not always possible due to the manner of death on a battlefield.
