During the day, you have to pay close attention to your residents, notice any problems, any discomfort, skin changes; you have to check temperatures, blood pressure, give a report to nurses which also includes intake/outtake amount and description. Take out for a walk, or help getting up, standing up, give a bed bath if a person cannot do bathroom showers, or use a lift/hoyer to lift them and sit them on a shower chair. Residents always have some kind of activities every day, it can be a lunch meeting, it can be bingo games, or just singing to musical instruments. In the evening, you prepare them for bedtime, make sure everything they need is in their rooms and in your supply closets. You pass out ice in cups, and check on people at least every 2 hours, and change some residents' sleeping position to another side if it's in their care plan, and check for incontinence, put your name in residents' care plan papers, sign, look up who has a shower scheduled for the morning, listen to the nurse reports. In the morning, you have to get your residents up, give them a shower if they have it scheduled, and personal hygene routines (brush teeth or dentures, wash face, change diapers, put on antibolic stockings if they have to have them on, ask what they want to wear, dress them, comb hair, give some tissue, make their bed, changing linens if necessary. And then, the day starts again!

The point of standing duty on a ship is to keep it safe and secure. So no, he can't leave.

I was in the Coast Guard, not the Navy, so I'm not sure how it works, but on my duty days I would work my regular hours and then stand one or two watches depending on the size of my duty section.
